App I Fikri (LIM’S SPHERE) was questioned regarding the gelding’s performance. He stated that he had been instructed from his outside draw, to attempt to get the gelding onto the fence. He had found himself in the last position and although urging the gelding mid-race, it had not responded. In the straight, he had ridden out by using the whip in both hands but near the 350M, his whip had become entangled in the horse’s mane when changing hands. Further, he was marginally impeded behind SMART INVESTMENT near the 200M.
Whilst accepting his explanation, the Stewards advised App I Fikri that he is expected to ride in a diligent manner and ensure that his horses were put into the race out at all times.

11 |
UNDER OATH (R Rueven) |
Bumped and became unbalanced near the 500M. |
Jockey J Low (HANDSOME BOY) was questioned as to why the gelding was not ridden in a forward position. He advised that he had requested for the gelding to be loaded last, however, this request was not acceded to but the horse’s tail was held by the barrier attendant. After jumping only fairly, he had been tightened for room and thereafter had been unable to obtain the forward position that he had wished for. HANDSOME BOY had commenced to race fiercely and had dipped significantly on straightening and again just prior to the winning post, Trainer HY Cheng was advised to report any findings to the Stewards. HANDSOME BOY was subject to a further veterinary examination before being permitted to race again.
When questioned regarding the performance of DOCTOR GINGER, Jockey HS Gill stated that the gelding was fractious in the stalls and after fly-jumping, was crowded and he had been unable to take up customary leading position, and the gelding had laid outwards considerably, racing wide from the 1000M until straightening. Although he had ridden the horse forward in the straight, it had failed to respond and he considered that the gelding was only suited when able to lead.
Trainer MP Thwaites’ Assistant Trainer advised that MR ALFONSO had failed to perform in three (3) recent outstation races, however, that the gelding had won when being ridden prominently and that it had raced in a trialled in a prominent position on the 15th of February 2022. He considered that MR ALFONSO did not relish travelling and was better suited by racing in KL but he had been restricted by suitability of races and distances, thus taking the horse outstation. The Stewards advised Trainer MP Thwaites’ Assistant Trainer that MR ALFONSO is expected to be ridden in a consistent manner in lead/handy and that consideration be given to restricting its starts to local racing.

11 |
ELISE (KC Wong) |
Slow into stride. |
Jockey CK Khaw (LEO) stated that the gelding had commenced to tire quickly and he had ridden it out in an effort to get it to respond, however, it had lost considerable ground in a short space. The Stewards were concerned that Jockey CK Khaw’s whip usage was abstract and not consistent with his normal fashion. He explained this being that he had used the whip only on a few occasions and had changed it to his left hand but it had become entangled with his reins. Whilst accepting his explanation, the Stewards were conscious of the fact that LEO had been beaten 19 lengths and had lost considerable ground over the final 200M. The Stewards instructed that LEO be subject to a veterinary examination before being permitted to race again.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey KC Wong’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of four (4) Malaysian race days with effect from 21 March 2022 and to expire on 3 April 2022, both dates inclusive.
