STIPENDIARY STEWARDS’ REPORT
SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2018
SUNDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2018
STATE OF TRACK: Yielding
Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:
Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward)
RACE 1 (R1308) CLASS 5 (B) – 1400M (LONG COURSE B)
App A Zaimuddin was unavailable to ride MEWTWO due to injury. As the Stewards considered there was no suitable Apprentice rider available, they allowed the substitution of claiming Jockey C Goon.
LETHAL WEAPON (J De Souza) cast its near fore plate and had to be reshod behind the barriers. The gelding was checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon and was passed fit to race.
MUSANG KING (App WK Lee) kicked out and made contact with the back gate while in the stall. The gelding was taken out of the barrier, checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon and was passed fit to race. MUSANG KING jumped awkwardly and was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000M, GOOD VIBRATIONS (App L De Souza) commenced to over-race in response to the pace slowing, brushed the rail, and then had to be shifted outwards to avoid the heels of WILL BE BETTER (SU Lim).
When questioned, Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of EMPEROR WARRIOR, stated that his riding instruction were to race in midfield but that the gelding seemed to resent being restrained and was disappointing.
Trainer W Lim stated that he had nothing to add to Jockey S Ruzaini’s explanation. He was warned by the Stewards in terms of his responsibilities under MRA Rule 35(8) to notify the Stewards if his horses are to be ridden in a manner different to their most recent start or starts. A post-race veterinary examination of EMPEROR WARRIOR revealed no significant finding.

Jockey Y Aify, the rider of SRIKANDI, was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for failing to seek the permission from the Stewards within the prescribed time, to ride overweight on SRIKANDI.
GOLDHILL PRINCESS (J De Souza) stood still as the barrier opened and was slow to begin. The gelding which was beaten 20 1/4 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet (from the Starting Stall) test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.
THAI BAHT (C Goon) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 200M, SANDY MIGHT (App WW Cheah) commenced to shift inwards under pressure.
BIG BUS (App AM Aizat) laid inwards under pressure in the final 200M.
An inquiry into the running and handling of JUST DUIT (HK Cheng) will be held on a date to be fixed.
Shortly before the races, Trainer SY Lim approached a Stipendiary Steward to inform him that WE’RE THE WORLD (App WK Lee), which is habitually ridden from a forward position, would be ridden in midfield on this occasion.
In the race, WE’RE THE WORLD led from the early stages and won. The Stewards asked Trainer SY Lim about this discrepancy. He stated that WE’RE THE WORLD took the lead easily without being urged to do so, and that in his opinion, he had fulfilled his responsibility to inform the Stewards of any intended change to riding tactics.
The Stewards informed Trainer SY Lim that an inquiry would be held into this matter on a date to be fixed.

RACE 3 (R1310) CLASS 5 (A) – 1400M (LONG COURSE B)
ANAK WARRIOR (S Salee) was slow to find its stride and raced wide in the middle stages.
D’GREAT HAWK (App L De Souza) was slow to find its stride and was urged in the early stages to keep in touch.
At about the 800M, UNION JAC (HS Gill) which was racing wide, laid outwards causing ANAK WARRIOR, which was following, to be shifted wider and to ease to avoid the heels of UNION JAC. ANAK WARRIOR lost its position as a result of this incident.
At about the 300M, ASTRO MAN (C Goon) laid inwards slightly as DOMINATE (App WK Lee) shifted outwards under pressure causing BIG PARIS (SU Lim) to be disappointed for a run and to check to avoid the heels of ASTRO MAN.
Between the 300M and the 200M, D’GREAT HAWK (App L De Souza) was disappointed for a run on the heels of DOMINATE.
Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of ARLO, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. ARLO which was beaten 20 1/2 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination of ARLO revealed no significant finding.
Jockey S Salee, the rider of ANAK WARRIOR, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of ANAK WARRIOR revealed no significant finding.
When questioned, Jockey C Goon, the rider of ASTRO MAN, reported that the gelding had over-raced in the early stages and continued to do so when crossed by WHAT (Z Khairil) at about the 1000M. He therefore eased ASTRO MAN outside as a precautionary measure to avoid clipping heels. Thereafter ASTRO MAN was trapped wide and was unable to shift inwards approaching the 500M due to the position of BIG PARIS to his inside.

RACE 4 (R1311) CLASS 4 (B) – 1300M (LONG COURSE B)
Acting on the veterinary advice that GERMANIC (HS Gill) had sustained laceration over the forehead, the gelding was withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 12:03pm. GERMANIC will be required to undergo a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.
SOUTHERN MAN (J Mallyon) jumped awkwardly outwards, had to be checked inwards to avoid contact with CRAZY CLUB (App CK Khaw) and raced ungenerously in the early stages.
TAUBOSS (C Goon) showed no pace in the early stages despite being urged and laid outwards under pressure in the straight. TAUBOSS will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having difficult racing manners.
When questioned, Jockey J De Souza, the rider of FEISTY LEO, reported that although he was able to obtain a handy early position, FEISTY LEO responded moderately in the straight and felt flat overall. When asked by the Stewards if he had been disappointed for a run approaching the 200M, Jockey J De Souza explained that the gap between GREENSTONE (Z Khairil) and LUCKY SIXTYSIX (HK Cheng) was sufficient if his mount had been good enough. Jockey J De Souza reported after the race that the gelding was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of FEISTY LEO revealed no significant finding. The gelding was impounded.

PREMIUM RUSH (S Ruzaini) sat back as the gate opened and was slowly away. The gelding will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.
ROC THAT (C Goon) raced wide in the middle stages.
Between the 500M and the 300M, TWO SHAKES (App WK Lee) was disappointed for a clear run on the heels of MAREA NEGRO (S Anandan).
At about the 100M, MAREA NEGRO laid inwards and brushed with AUSSIE EAGLE (R Rueven).
App WK Lee, the rider of TWO SHAKES, reported that his horse raced greenly throughout.
At the conclusion of an inquiry, App AM Aizat, the rider of ELEGENT, in the presence of his Master, Trainer F Maynard, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that approaching the 900M, he allowed his mount to shift inwards and cross ENERGIZER (O Chavez) when not clear causing Jockey O Chavez to take evasive action.
In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App AM Aizat’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 22 October 2018 and to expire on 28 October 2018, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (3:51pm).
When questioned about the disappointing performance of SPIN FIRE, Trainer SB Tan, the trainer of SPIN FIRE, stated that he had instructed Jockey L Sofhan to ride the gelding slightly more conservatively today as he was racing over a longer distance. He added that Jockey L Sofhan reported post-race that the gelding finished tired. B Trainer MW Teh stated that in his opinion, SPIN FIRE is better suited by a firmer surface than today’s track condition. A post-race veterinary examination of SPIN FIRE revealed no significant finding. SPIN FIRE will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

WINGED FOOT (J Low) was slow to find its stride.
NOVA WARRIOR (S Ruzaini) over-raced in the early stages.
TH MAXIMS (HK Cheng), which raced well-back in the field, was denied any opportunity to make progress in the middle stages before being switched inside approaching the 400M to obtain a run on the rail. However, at this stage, Jockey HK Cheng was forced to shift outwards to avoid the heels of SCRAT which rolled inwards under pressure. Thereafter TH MAXIMS finished off the race well despite Jockey HK Cheng getting his whip tangled in his rein between the 400M and the 200M.

At about the 1000M, BACK TO THE TOWERS commenced to over-race and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of PLATOON (App AM Aizat) approaching the 800M.
Approaching the 300M, PLATOON was shifted outwards to maintain a clear passage when HARVEYWALLBANGER (App L De Souza) rolled inwards towards the rail and was thereafter angled outwards around GOOD INTENTIONS (A Aucharuz) at about the 200M to obtain a clear run.
From about the 150M, IDEAL GUIDE (App WW Cheah) was disappointed for a run on the heels of HARVEYWALLBANGER.

JERAM VILLAGE (Z Khairil) was slow to begin.
PRINCE RAVEN (S Ruzaini) was slow to find its stride.
COMMANDO ECLIPSE (App CK Khaw) jumped inwards and brushed with MR WOLFF (Y Aify).
OUT OF NOWHERE (A Aucharuz) laid inwards in the early stages, forcing the rider to ease and correct to avoid contact with HIGH COUNCIL (App A Suriya).
Approaching the 50M, MR WOLFF rolled inwards under pressure causing Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of PRINCE RAVEN to check in response.
At about the 50M, BLACK THORN (C Goon) was forced to shift outwards abruptly to avoid the heels of D’GREAT EMINENCE (J Low).
When questioned regarding the performance of HIGH COUNCIL (App A Suriya), Trainer C Leck stated that the gelding was ideally suited by a longer distance than the 1300M of today’s race and that when he won over 1300M on 9 September 2018, it was in a lower class.
He added that he had instructed App A Suriya to ride HIGH COUNCIL from a mid-to-back position as he feels that the gelding lacks the pace to race prominently over the 1300M. In his opinion, HIGH COUNCIL had performed disappointingly and was perhaps feeling the effect of a busy racing schedule.
The Stewards noted his explanation and reminded of his responsibilities under MRA Rule 35(8) to inform the Stewards prior to the race if any of his runners are to be ridden in a manner different to their most recent start or starts. Trainer C Leck was informed that he could inform the Stewards in person or through an assistant.

ONFLEEK (J Low) which was fractious at the starting gates, reared up and hit its head. Acting on veterinary advice that ONFLEEK was bleeding from its nostrils, the gelding was withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 5:47pm. The Club Veterinary Surgeon subsequently reported that ONFLEEK died of a suspected brain haemorrhage.
ORION (App CK Khaw) jumped inwards, causing SPEED CRAFT (J De Souza) to be taken inwards onto LIM’S MASTER (App WK Lee) which shied inwards in response.
At about the 400M, COMMODORE LINCOLN (O Chavez) commenced to lay inwards causing VERGLATICA (S Ruzaini) to be taken inwards and the gap to narrow between VERGLATICA and JJ STAR (S Salee). At this point, SOON SEEKER (A Aucharuz) had to be eased out of the gap to avoid the heels of JJ STAR, causing GOLD MOSA (App AM Aizat) to be shifted outwards to avoid his heels.
At about the 200M, COMMODORE LINCOLN laid in abruptly under pressure despite the rider’s best efforts, causing VERGLATICA to be taken inwards and SOON SEEKER to be checked to avoid the heels of VERGLATICA. At this point, ORION (App CK Khaw) was also crowded to the inside of SOON SEEKER. Jockey A Aucharuz, the rider of SOON SEEKER which finished fourth, reported that but for this incident, he would have achieved a better placing.
At about the 50M, SOON SEEKER was shifted outwards away from the heels of VERGLATICA, taking LIM’S MASTER slightly outwards towards GOLD MOSA. GOLD MOSA was then bumped inwards by SPEED CRAFT in the last few strides, causing him to abruptly cross LIM’S MASTER which clipped heels and blundered.
After reviewing the vision of this incident, it was established that no particular rider was to be blamed for this incident and as such the Stewards deemed it as a racing incident.

GALLOPY SWIFT (J Mallyon) backed out of the barrier and when reinstalled, became cast. The Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the gelding at 6:20pm. The gelding will be required to pass a 1000M/vet (from the starting stall) test before being declared to race again.
SUPREME STAR (App WK Lee) was slow to begin.
RANT AND RAVE (J Low) laid outwards and lost ground at about the 500M.
Approaching the 100M, PERFECT RUN (App WW Cheah) shifted in slightly causing PERFECT PEARL (App AM Aizat), which was racing in restricted room, to be awkwardly placed on the heels of LIM’S ACTION (App L De Souza) and to shift inwards causing SUPER EIGHT (O Chavez) to be crowded next to the rail. PERFECT PEARL had to be gathered and corrected by his rider who was then unable to ride with his full vigour to the finish.
MAJOR IMPROVEMENT (J De Souza) was pulled up in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of MAJOR IMPROVEMENT revealed that it was lame off fore and as such will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.
App WK Lee, the rider of SUPREME STAR, reported that the saddle on his horse slipped backwards during running. A post-race veterinary examination of SUPREME STAR revealed that it was lame off fore and as such will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.

RACE 1 (R1236) CLASS 5 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), NEW DAWN STAKES, SUNDAY, 7 OCTOBER 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2018
The Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of TOTALITY in the above race. They took evidence from Trainer WC Lim who on 7 October 2018, had made a complaint to the Stewards about Jockey S Sandana’s failure to follow his riding instructions.
Trainer WC Lim stated that he had instructed Jockey S Sandana to ride a forward race and take a position just behind the leader which he expected to be his stable mate, NOVA EAGLE (S Ruzaini). He felt that Jockey S Sandana had restrained TOTALITY unnecessarily in the early stages and not obtained the best possible run as a result. He accepted that TOTALITY had suffered interference in the closing stages from the winner.
The inquiry was adjourned in order to take evidence from Jockey S Sandana.
