Variant Not To Be Ignored
27 December, Kuala Lumpur
The final race meeting for the year for the Selangor Turf Club is upon us and will host a nine race card on Saturday the 28th of December. After a disappointing end to last week’s meeting, after being abandoned due to inclement weather, hopefully it’s all systems go for a full meeting with some good results for punters to end the 2024 year on a successful note.
Red Dragonfly is unbeaten in three starts in Malaysia and will be looking to make it four in a row in race 2. This tends to be a hurdle for a few of the runners relocating to Malaysia but Red Dragonfly remains in Class 5 company which should boost his chances once again. He steps up slightly in trip to 1400m which is a bit of a query considering he has only placed once from eleven starts over this distance. He still remains the first selection. The biggest dangers should be Golden Eighteen and Kick with respect for last start winner, Best Chilli who won first up from Singapore.
When opening the race card one horse stood out with the big drop in class and that is Family Delight in race 3. After running 7th and beaten 4 lengths in the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor over 2000m, he drops back in trip to the mile in class 4 company. From G1 to Class 4 is a rather big downgrade and that alone should warrant a first selection status for this field.
Race 5 is an interesting race where there should be some value for a few runners. The type of race is a Max Two stakes meaning horses with no more than two wins can enter. There should be a lot of attention for Smart One from the C Leck stable to win again after a comfortable win by over 3 lengths last time out but he is actually out at the weights with Variant. Despite being the highest rated horse in the race, Variant races off a rating of 55 but will carry 1kg less than Smart One despite being rated 5 points higher than Smart One. To put it simply, if it was a handicap, Variant would be giving Smart One 2,5kgs compared to the 1kg he’ll be receiving from him. This could provide some value for punters to include.
No More Delay steps out in race 7 and he’ll be looking to make it three wins from four starts since moving to Malaysia. He jumps from pole position, SU Lim retains the ride and meets a field where the majority of horses have lost a touch of form. He stands out as one of the better bets on the card.
On behalf of the Selangor Turf Club, we wish you a prosperous 2025 and hope to see you at the races one final time for the 2024 year.
