Energy Baby holds on to win from Big Union (No. 4) and Emerald Lisi

Energy Baby, who won five times for his trainer Jerome Tan at Kranji, has picked up his second win in just four starts in Malaysia following the pair’s relocation.

And on both occasion, the New Zealand gelding played the spoiler role.

Last month, Energy Baby accounted for a Supreme B race over 1200m by narrowly defeating the favourite Faithful Leader.

Faithful Leader came out next to run second to Antipodean in a Supreme A conetest last month and started second favourite in the Class 2 – 1400m handicap at Sungsi Besi today.

Starting favourite this time was Big Union, winner of five races in 10 starts for Tan in Singapore and having his third start in the country. He was fifth to Antipodean last time out.

But Energy Baby stole the thunder from his stablemate with a superb ride from Andre Luis Da Silva.

Emerald Lisi led briefly after the jump but Faithful Leader quickly took over and led from Hurricane on settling down. The pair then made a breakaway turning out of the back straight to lead by six lengths from Emerald Lisi.

Energy Baby was another three lengths away fourth, being restrained by jockey Da Silva who had won on the gelding last month.

Faithful Leader led into the straight and soon after Hurricane came under pressure and lost ground. Emerald Lisi was next with Energy Baby poised to make his challenge.

Faithful Leader was still in front at the 200m with Emerald Lisi very much in the chase. By then Energy Baby was looming large behind the two runners.

Energy Baby took a split between the front two to hit the front inside the 100m. Emerald Lisi fought on gallantly and Big Union started to charge home on the outside to make four in a line.

Energy Baby held on to his advatnage and won by a head from Big Union. Emerald Lisi was another half a length away third.

“I think Da Silva suited the horse (Energy Baby),” said Tan.

(The Brazilian jockey reunited with the horse today after missing the ride on the horse’s last outing.)

“It was a good win. I was quietly confident that he will win today.”
