INTENT made known his credentials with a first-up win in Malaysia in a Class 4 – 1200m handicap at Sungei Besi here today. 

Ridden by Jose De Souza, the Australian gelding was initially challenged by GOLDEN MAN for the lead but eventually took command on settling down.

INTENT led into the straight from GOLDEN MAN with SACRED TONIC poised to challenge a close third.

GOLDEN MAN failed to run on from the 300m and it was SACRED TONIC who tried desperately to catch the leader from there on. They drew away from the rest in the run home but INTENT was always too good for SACRED TONIC, winning by 3/4 length at the end.

The son of Lonhro was presented the sale in New Zealand and was knocked down for NZ$100,000. He did not race at two but performed consistently as a three-year-old with five placings in eight starts in New Zealand. He arrived in Malaysia last July.

“INTENT has taken some time to acclimatise since arriving from New Zealand,” said trainer Simon Dunderdale. “Well ridden by Jose and a strong first-up win.”

“Very promising type,” said De Souza. “He was a bit unsettled when he took the lead but when I asked him for an effort in the final stages he found a second gear.”

INTENT was placed up to 2100m in New Zealand, so expect him to be much better over longer trips in the future.
