Horse Racing Carnival with Malaysian Celebrities
In an effort to recognize the contribution of our local artist in the entertainment industry, the Selangor Turf Club hosted “An Afternoon of Horse Racing Carnival with Malaysian Celebrities” on Sunday, 17 September 2023.
The event, held in collaboration with Malaysia China Performing Arts Industry Association (MCPAIA) and UPBH World Holding (M) Sdn Bhd saw close to 350 guests comprising of Malaysian Celebrities cum Artists, Actors, Actress, Singers, Dancers and DJ’s had a wonderful time at the races supporting and cheering home their favorite horse.
Among the artists present at the event were Actress Angela Chan, Singer Cilla Chia, Lenny Ooi and Vinnie Kok, Film Director Teng Bee, My FM DJ Jeff Chin and badminton legend Datuk Cheah Soon Kit.
Attractive prizes were awarded in the Best Dressed Competition. The judges had a tough task in selecting the winners as the ladies had put in tremendous effort dressing up for the event with matching hats.
To coincide with the event, the Club hosted two special races, Tan Sri Nelson Tan Celebrities Trophy, named after the Advisor of MCPAIA, Tan Sri Nelson Tan Jyh Yaong and the Malaysia Celebrities Trophy. The race was won by Xena and Intrepid respectively. Tan Sri Nelson presented the prizes to the winning connections of Xena, meanwhile Dato’ Sri Ang Lai Hee, Mr Lenny Ooi and Ms Angela Chan presented the prizes to the winning connections of Intrepid.
The Hygain Horse City Selangor Gold Cup, offering RM150,000 prize money was the main drawcard of the day. The race was sponsored by Horse City Sdn Bhd and has been one of the most coveted classic race in the Malaysian horse racing circuit.
In the Hygain Horse City Selangor Gold Cup, “Pasir Pinji”, named after a constituency in the state of Perak, produced an irresistible finish upsetting more fancied contenders to clinch the Cup by half a length. Ridden by Brazilian jockey, B Pinheiro and trained by New Zealander Simon Dunderdale, “Pasir Pinji” is owned by Mr Yee Kin Kong. The trophies for the Group 1 race were presented by Director, Captain Tan Tiang Huat and Managing Director, Ms Sandra Shaw, of Horse City Sdn Bhd.

On the same day, the Club hosted to running of the Platinum Horse Entrepreneur Club Malaysia Day Trophy in celebration of Malaysia Day a day earlier. The race was won by Mr Hanks, ridden by Apprentice AB Ridzuan and trained by S Ellis. Founder of UPBH World Holding (M) Sdn Bhd, Dr Peter Chaw presented the prizes to the winning connections.
On Malaysia Day, 16th September, the Club staged the running of Tabcorp Trophy. Tabcorp Holdings Limited is the leading diversified gambling entertainment group with offices located in several parts of Australia. The Club signed a simulcast and wagering agreement with Tabcorp Holdings Limited in 2020 and ever since then Selangor races are broadcast to Australia. General Manager of Sky Racing and International, Mr Paul Cross presented the prizes to the winning connections.
