Chong quick off the mark
KUALA LUMPUR: Jul 24, 2022
Newly-licensed apprentice Chong Kar Hoong is off the mark in just his seventh race ride on BLACK QUAIL in the final event at Sungei Besi here today.
Just last week, the pair attempted to make all the running in a Class 4 handicap over 1300m at this track, but the Coats Prince gelding faded to finish third to ELITE GENERAL.
All races were run on the No 2 track today and over a shorter distance of 1175m, there was no catching him. BLACK QUAIL led all the way, winning by 1 1/4 lengths.
“I just can’t believe the horse brought me all the way to the winning post,” said an elated Chong. “I am very happy to win my first race and I am grateful to my trainer and the owner for the ride.”
Chong is another graduate of the Selangor Turf Club Apprentice Academy to taste success recently.
“The Selangor Turf Club Apprentice Academy is a big plus to the racing industry,” said trainer Richard Lines, who is also the Chong’s, Master.
“He is a hard working boy who deserves the win today. If he continues to work hard I think he has a bright future ahead of him.”
BLACK QUAIL won three races in Singapore before he was sent over to Lines at the end of last year. The eight-year-old won his Malaysia debut back in February and has been placed three times since before notching his second win today.
