Fikri lands first win on Show Hand

Apprentice Nor Mohamad Fikri Ismail came desperately close to open winning accounts last month when he was beaten a short head on SHOW HAND at Sungei Besi here last month.

But the 26-year-old was not to be denied on the same horse today when he piloted the New Zealand gelding to victory in a Class 4 – 1600m handicap.

Caught three-wide after starting from the outside barrier, Fikri managed to squeeze him inside and eventually take the rails run making the first turn. But the pair were still many lengths from the leaders at the top of the straight.

Fikri then slowly moved SHOW HAND out from rails from the 300m. It took the gelding quite a while to really get going in the cut-up track and it was only in the final 100m that he swept to the front and went on to win by one length.

“He rode the horse well to instructions,” said Fikri’s master Lawson Moy who also trains the gelding. “His earlier experience finishing second on the horse proved beneficial.”

“I am so happy I rode my first winner today,” said Fikri who hails from Kelantan and joined Moy as a syce three years ago.

“The horse responded well to me today. I would to thank my master and the owner for giving me the chance.

“I would like to thank the Selangor Turf Club for the opportunity to be part of them, and grateful to the Selangor Turf Club Apprentice School for the training I received.”

SHOW HAND has now started five times for two wins and three seconds.
