Sunday hosted eleven races on the program as well as the second leg of the Triple Crown Series, The Hygain Horse City Selangor Gold Cup which was won by a gutsy Antipodean who fought back after being passed by Golden Pegasus to win the 1600m G1.

There was plenty on offer throughout the day with the Selangor Turf Club hosting in conjunction with the Merdeka celebration on 31st August 2024 of which the theme was Galloping Into 67 Years of Unity and Prosperity. The event was held in appreciation of the Unity and Prosperity that the country has enjoyed for the past 67 years. There were over 200 guests in attendance of which the fashion on display was nothing short of jaw dropping with the ladies dressed in pink and the men in silver. It certainly set the scene for one of the best G1 races Malaysia has seen in sometime.

Thirteen horses lined up for the G1 event and all of the talk prior to the race was the battle between the S Dunderdale trained Antipodean and the W Lim trained Golden Pegasus and it certainly lived up to the expectation. Antipodean had a tough trip around the turn when trapped three deep and kept out by Golden Pegasus. However, there was no panic on the superstar and moved up to hit the front 400m. Golden Pegasus stalked his every move at the top of the straight under S Ruzaini, and travelling like a winner when he moved up alongside and then past Antipodean with 200m to go. Nothing looked like catching him and eventually had a 3/4 length lead over Antipodean but the young gun showed all of his heart and courage when somehow, being lifted off the canvas, he managed to fight back and win by a shorthead in what certainly must be the race of the season. The entire racecourse cheering on the two superstars with the run down to the wire in what was a goosebump moment for anyone in attendance. There was a brief pause to the celebrations with an objection being laid by the second placed jockey against the winner on grounds of interference however, it was overruled and the day was just meant to be for Antipodean.

With so many highlights from the fashion to the thoroughbreds on the track, one man certainly stood out as jockey B PINHEIRO rode six winners on the program including all of MADE IN CHINA in the first race; SACRED JUDGEMENT in Race 3; REVOLUTION in the Horse City Trophy followed by DEFEATER; ANTIPODEAN in the Hygain Horse City Selangor Gold Cup and closed off his day with MOMENT OF JUSTICE in Race 10. It was a landmark day for him as not only was this his third Selangor Gold Cup victory, it also brought up 700 career wins for the Brazilian jockey who’s simply in a league of his own.

For the undercard events, REVOLUTION won the Horse City Trophy in Race 5 for the S Dunderdale stable under another top ride by Pinheiro. The other event on the day was the UPBH Platinum Trophy over 1400m and was won by the impressive GULF EAGLE under CK Khaw for the R Lines stable and has been flying high as a three time winner from five career starts. A big congratulations and well done to all the winning connections on the day and to the sponsors for a well organised and world class day at the races at the STC.
