A recent change of trainer has brought about a dramatic improvement in GOLDEN PEGASUS who has now won three of his last four starts and destined for bigger things.

The Star Turn gelding beat a strong field of four-year-olds to win the RM80,000 Selangor Turf Club 4YO Sprint (1200m) last June 30.

After a third to PACIFIC EMPIRE over 1020m on the No 2 track, GOLDEN PEGASUS was back in the winner’s circle when he took out the RM100,000 4YO Safar Gemilang Cup over 1600m last July 21, coming from last early to win by three lengths.

The now five-year-old followed up on that run to win the Supreme B event over 1600m at Sungai Besi today in a similar fashion.

Ridden by Lim Aun Kean for the first time, the Australian gelding again settled well back in the early running.

GOLDEN PEGASUS was second last in the field of eight which bunched up making the turn into the straight. He was gradually switched out wide for his run and at the 300m, joined a line of five horses vying for the lead.

The two front runners LEOPARD ECLIPSE and SHANGHAI NIGHTS were soon passed by GOLDEN PAYOUT and then GOLDEN PEGASUS. The latter, however, kicked clear with 200m to go and raced away to win by three and three quarter lengths ahead of GOLDEN PAYOUT.

“I am lucky to get the ride on the horse who has two recent wins behind him,” said Lim. “He gave me very good feel. He is smart and well balanced. He’s has a bright future.”

Asked about his chances in the Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) coming up, Lim said if the trainer can maintain his form, then GOLDEN PEGASUS will have a big say in the event. “Hopefully, I will get to ride him again,” he added.

“He (GOLDEN PEGASUS) surprises me with every run,” said trainer Wayne Lim who took over the gelding two months ago and the Australian gelding has now won thrice under him.

“After this win, the owner and myself are now hoping to win a big race with him.”

GOLDEN PEGASUS, bought for A$19,000 as an unraced three-year-old at an online sale last year, has now six wins and six placings in 14 starts.
