SUNDAY, 19 NOVEMBER 2017
STATE OF TRACK: Yielding (Races 1 to 5), upgraded to “Good” after Race 5.
Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:
Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward), Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Jarry Chong (Stipendiary Steward).
RACE 1 (R1459) CLASS 5 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)
NHS EQUINE EXPOSITION STAKES
POLO MASTER (App AK Lim) was slow to begin and was outpaced in the first half of the race.
LITTLE LION (App P Haris) which was difficult to be loaded, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet (from the starting stall) test before being declared to race again.
At about the 700M, NO NONSENSE (App M Hanif) eased to avoid the heels of D’GREAT WALL (App CK Khaw).
At about the 350M, NO NONSENSE was angled inwards to obtain clear running and thereafter commenced to lay in under pressure.
In the last 50M, VALENTINE BABY (App S Uzair) commenced to lay in under pressure.
The Stewards questioned App M Hanif, the rider of NO NONSENSE, in the presence of his Master, Trainer LN Danis, and Trainer SY Lim, the Trainer of NO NONSENSE. App M Hanif stated that NO NONSENSE who was wearing Blinkers for the first time, showed no inclination to go forward in the early stages. He added that the horse showed some response to pressure in the straight but laid in badly, forcing him to switch his whip at the 100M and interrupting NO NONSENSE’s momentum. A post-race veterinary examination of NO NONSENSE revealed that the gelding returned exhibiting signs of respiratory distress and as such will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.

Thereafter SPLENDOR became unbalanced and forfeited a significant amount of ground. SPLENDOR was unable to catch up with the rest of the field and raced in a detached last place throughout. The Stewards opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the start and the running and handling of SPLENDOR in the race.
The Stewards took initial evidence from the Starter, Assistant Starter and Mr Fazal Maula, the Barrier Handler who had held SPLENDOR’s tail when requested to do so. They also took initial evidence from Trainer L Moy who was questioned about his reasons for declaring App S Uzair to ride SPLENDOR given that App W Faizal, who had ridden the gelding to win his previous start, was available. Having heard this initial evidence, the Stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed.
HIGH COUNCIL (App CK Khaw) was slow to begin.
LEE BANK (App P Haris) laid out approaching the 400M in response to the rider using the whip in his left hand. The Stewards noted the improvement in LEE BANK’s racing manners today and informed Trainer M Sukri that they would accept the booking of App P Haris for this ride in future.

GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC
SUNDAY, 19 NOVEMBER 2017, SLTC NOVEMBER MEETING 2017
The Stewards called before them Jockey SS Vanan and showed him the film of his rides on ACME (21/10/17), LUCKY SIXTYSIX (22/10/17) and ARLO (29/10/17). In each case, Jockey SS Vanan was observed to have taken an excessive amount of time to switch his whip from one hand to the other.
The Stewards informed him that they considered this aspect of his riding to fall below the expected standard and warned him to improve in this regard in future.
WEDNESDAY, 15 NOVEMBER 2017, SLTC TRACKWORK
Trainer LN Danis was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for presenting CAMERA STELLATA (R603) with a wrong saddle cloth number for the above trackwork.
Trainer L Moy was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for allowing VALENTINE BABY (Y222) to be on the heath track during the above trackwork when not permitted to do so.
RACE 9 (R1342) CLASS 4 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A), SUNDAY, 22 OCTOBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2017
The Stewards, on 14 November 2017 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of ARC CARA. Evidence was taken from App S Zulfikri, the rider of ARC CARA, in the presence of his Master, Trainer PS Kumaran, and Trainer S Dunderdale, the Trainer of ARC CARA.
App S Zulfikri was found guilty of a charge of incompetent riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(b)(iii) in that:
- Despite knowing that ARC CARA had a tendency to lay in during its races, he used his whip in the right hand in the straight.
- Between the 400M and the 150M, he continued to use his whip in the right hand causing ARC CARA to drift towards other horses and away from the available gap between MORE POWER (J De Souza) and D’ GREAT VULTURE (App KC Wong), thus making it necessary to ease and straighten the gelding on multiple occasions, and interrupt his momentum.
- By his own admission to the Stewards, he felt unable to use his whip effectively in his left hand.
In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App S Zulfikri’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of his suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) months with effect from 20 November 2017 and to expire on 19 January 2018, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (3:05pm).
RACE 5 (R1376) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SUNDAY, 29 OCTOBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2017
The Stewards, on 31 October 2017 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of IMMORTALITY. Evidence was taken from Trainer S Dunderdale and Jockey H Bukhari, the Trainer and rider of IMMORTALITY respectively.
Trainer S Dunderdale explained that IMMORTALITY found the 1200M distance of this race too short but there was no alternative race in which to run the mare. He added that the mare may have been unsuited by the “yielding” going.
Jockey H Bukhari stated that IMMORTALITY struggled to keep up with the early pace and was shuffled back into last place at about the 1000M. When asked why he did not attempt to get closer at about the 500M or develop a run on the outside at about the 400M, he replied that the mare was not travelling fluently and was simply unable to make up ground at this point of the race. He further added that IMMORTALITY shifted in away from the whip at about the 300M which made it more difficult to obtain clear running.
After considering the evidence and reviewing the films, the Stewards decided to take no further action.
RACE 7 (R1378) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SUNGEI BESI AUTOWORLD CUP, SUNDAY, 29 OCTOBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2017
At the conclusion of an inquiry on 31 October 2017 at the Selangor Turf Club, Jockey H Bukhari, the rider of JERAM VILLAGE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that in the last 50M in this race, he allowed his horse to shift in when insufficiently clear of SCRAT (TK Barnabas).
In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey H Bukhari’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Selangor Turf Club race days with immediate effect from 31 October 2017 and to expire on 10 December 2017, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (2:50pm).
