STIPENDIARY STEWARDS’ REPORT
SELANGOR TURF CLUB APRIL MEETING 2019
SATURDAY, 6 APRIL 2019
STATE OF TRACK: Yielding (Races 1 to 4), upgraded to “Good” after Race 4.
Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:
Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward), Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Jarry Chong (Stipendiary Steward).
RACE 1 (R414) CLASS 5 (B) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)
LIM’S GREETING (HS Gill) was slow to begin.
At about the 1150M, POLO GAGA (Z Khairil) shifted inwards causing JET ACE (O Chavez) to be eased. Jockey Z Khairil was shown the vision of the incident and warned to take greater care when crossing in front of rivals under similar circumstances in future.
At about the 900M, JET ACE was eased to avoid running onto the heels of POLO GAGA.
Approaching the 200M, TILSWORTH JOSHI (S Muniandy) was disappointed for a run on the heels of SEA HORIZON (App L De Souza) and was forced to shift outwards just inside the 200M for clear running.
At about the 100M, JET ACE was struck twice in quick succession over the nose by the whip of Jockey Z Khairil, the rider of POLO GAGA. After viewing the vision of the incident, the Stewards were unable to attribute blame to any one rider and deemed it a racing incident.
When questioned regarding the different tactics employed on SEA HORIZON, Trainer R Lines stated that the gelding does not normally lead in its races, and he was surprised that he had the speed to do so on this occasion. He added that in his opinion, the race was run at a slow pace. His attention was drawn to the provisions of MRA Rule 117(3) which relates to inconsistent and unreliable running.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of HYDRANT (J Low), Trainer C Leck stated that this was the weakest race the gelding had contested and it had benefitted from a drop in grade on this occasion.

GOOD VIBRATIONS (App L De Souza) raced keenly in the middle stages, ran onto the heels of ZOLVED (App WW Cheah) at the 600M, and blundered badly. After reviewing the vision of the incident, the Stewards were unable to attribute blame to any one rider and deemed it a racing incident. App L De Souza lost both irons in this incident, and was thereafter unable to ride out GOOD VIBRATIONS which was eased out of the race from the 400M.
GERMAN SPEED had to be shifted outwards approaching the 200M to obtain clear running.
In the last few strides, VELLENEX GENERAL (S Ruzaini) was crowded against the rail by RAINBOW CENTRE (Y Aify) which laid gradually inwards.

RACE 4 (R417) CLASS 4 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)
SHARON’S STAR (App S Uzair) jumped inwards causing L’KEN (App WW Cheah) to be crowded and carried inwards onto JERAM VILLAGE (Z Khairil) which was also inconvenienced.
MR MOSA (App L De Souza) raced wide in the middle stages.
BLACK THORN (HK Cheng) was outpaced in the middle stages.
Approaching the 300M, ALLIED POWER (O Chavez) laid inwards and brush with MORE POWER (App CK Khaw) which was taken slightly inwards into the path of SHARON’S STAR (App S Uzair), which was following.
Approaching the 200M, SHARON’S STAR was shifted inwards for a run on the inside of EL TORDILLO (HS Gill) and at the 200M, BLACK THORN was switched outwards around SHARON’S STAR which had shifted inwards.
At the 200M, MORE POWER compounded causing L’KEN which was following, to be shifted outwards.
The State of Track was upgraded to “Good” after the running of this race.
RACE 5 (R418) CLASS 4 (B) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)
GAZOO (App CK Khaw) was slow to begin.
SATTAR (S Ruzaini) threw its head up on jumping, and raced ungenerously for the first few strides.
VOLANTE GENERAL (S Anandan) was slow to find its stride.
SILVER POWER (Z Khairil) stepped inwards on jumping.
At the 1100M, SECKILL (C Goon) commenced to lay outwards and raced awkwardly causing SMART MASTER (KC Wong) to be taken slightly outwards and brush with MACHUNG STAR (J Low) which was turned inwards.
When questioned, Jockey J Low, the rider of MACHUNG STAR, reported that having been turned inwards at the 1100M, he lost momentum, forfeited ground and was then caught on the heels of SECKILL which laid persistently outwards. He added that at about the 1000M, Jockey C Goon, the rider of SECKILL, eased his mount in an attempt to correct and due to this, MACHUNG STAR became trapped on his heels and was shuffled back.
At about the 500M, SMART MASTER was disappointed for a run on the heels of SECKILL.
Approaching the 400M, SILVER POWER laid outwards and negotiated the bend with difficulty causing MAREA NEGRO (App A Suriya) to be taken outwards in turn.
From the 300M, MACHUNG STAR laid inwards under pressure.
Approaching the 200M, SECKILL commenced to lay outwards under pressure.
When questioned regarding the improved form shown by SECKILL, Trainer BT Lim stated that the gelding had benefitted from a positive ride from an advantageous inside barrier. The Stewards drew his attention to his responsibilities under MRA Rule 35(8), which requires the Trainer to notify the Stewards if he intends a horse to be ridden in a manner different to its most recent start or starts.
RACE 6 (R419) CLASS 4 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)
ROCK EAGLE (HK Cheng) which reared in the gates, dislodged and winded his rider, was withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 4:04pm. The gelding will be required to pass a 1000M/vet (from the starting stall) test before being declared to race again due to his unruliness.
App L De Souza, the rider of RAINBOW FISH, reported that the gelding sat back in the barrier and was slow to begin. He was therefore unable to carry out his riding instructions which were to get a good jump and sit in 4th or 5th position. A post-race veterinary examination of RAINBOW FISH revealed no significant finding.
READY TO DANCE (J De Souza) was slow to find its stride.
HAPPY BABY (C Goon) was outpaced in the early stages.
ELITE GENERAL (HS Gill), which was drawn outside, raced wide throughout. ELITE GENERAL, which was beaten 14 1/2 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

Approaching the 200M, SUN FORCE (S Anandan) was shifted outwards to obtain clear running on the outside of ARC CARA (HK Cheng) but in doing so, rolled outwards causing RUSSELL THE CROWE (KC Wong) to be taken outwards onto SPEEDY DEMON (S Muniandy) which in turn became crowded on the inside of JUBILATION (App A Suriya).
All riders returned to scale an average of 1kg overweight due to the adverse weather conditions.
At the conclusion of an inquiry, App S Uzair, the rider of SOON SEEKER, in the presence of his Master, Trainer L Moy, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that:
- He rode with insufficient vigour between the 400M and the 100M when SOON SEEKER was staying on strongly and making up ground.
- He unnecessarily restrained SOON SEEKER approaching the 200M.
In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App S Uzair’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. App S Uzair was suspended from riding in races for a period of six (6) months with effect from Monday, 8 April 2019 and to expire on 7 October 2019, both days inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (6:25pm).
RACE 8 (R421) CLASS 3 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)
This race was rescheduled to start at 5:15pm.
MYSTIC MASTER (HS Gill) jumped outwards, causing CONFLIGHT (O Chavez), LUCKY JUSTICE (App CK Khaw) and SACRED GALAXY (KC Wong) to be tightened for room on the inside of GABBAR (S Anandan).
In the first few strides, GABBAR received contact from SACRED GALAXY (KC Wong) on his inside, became unbalanced and laid outwards causing FIRST PRECINCT (S Muniandy) which was following, to be shifted outwards.
FIRST PRECINCT was outpaced in the early stages.
LUCKY JUSTICE (App CK Khaw) laid inwards under pressure at about the 200M.
All riders returned to scale an average of 1 1/2kgs overweight due to the adverse weather conditions.

GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC
RACE 12 (R405) CLASS 5 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SUNDAY, 31 MARCH 2019, SELANGOR TURF CLUB MARCH MEETING 2019
The Stewards, on 6 April 2019 at the Selangor Turf Club, enquired into the running and handling of I’M A GENIUS. They questioned Jockey HK Cheng and took evidence from Trainer S Hamilton.
Jockey HK Cheng stated that his instructions were to settle the gelding in a mid-to-back position and that having done so, I’M A GENIUS finished the race well, leading him to advise the trainer to try a longer distance next time.
The Stewards warned Jockey HK Cheng that in future he must take opportunities to improve his position when they present themselves, and when making his finishing effort, he must ride in such a manner so as to leave no room for query.
AMENDMENT
RACE 4 (R397) AINTREE PARK CHALLENGE CUP – 1400M (LONG COURSE A), SUNDAY, 31 MARCH 2019, SELANGOR TURF CLUB MARCH MEETING 2019
The attention of all parties was drawn to the provisions of MRA Rule 117(4) which specifies that the jockey’s instructions must come from the Trainer, not the Owner. However, the Stewards accepted that on this occasion the Owner, Navaneethasingham a/l A Ratnasingham, had merely acknowledged the race plan suggested to him by his experienced and successful Jockey. They otherwise accepted the explanations tendered with regard to the running and handling of CONFEAT.
