SUNDAY, 8 APRIL 2018

STATE OF TRACK: Yielding (Races 1 to 7), upgraded to “Good” before Race 8.

Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:

Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward), Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Jarry Chong (Stipendiary Steward).

RACE 1 (R444)         CLASS 5 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)

AMI ELEVEN (App L De Souza) was fractious in the barrier and had to be urged to obtain a forward position.

MEGUSTO (App CK Khaw) was slow to find its stride and as a consequence, had to race wide in order to obtain a midfield position.

From the 400M to the 100M, RED SAPPHIRE (J De Souza) was persistently denied a clear run on the heels of EXCITING PROSPECT (SU Lim) and EASTWOOD (Y Aify), and was only able to obtain clear running when EASTWOOD was shifted outwards until the final 100M. Thereafter RED SAPPHIRE was angled outwards, but was only able to be fully tested in the last 50M.

From the 250M to the 50M, HAPPY EDDINGTON (App WK Lee) was disappointed for a run on the heels of AMI ELEVEN and EXCITING PROSPECT, and only obtained clear running inside the last 50M.

From the 150M, MESSI (Z Khairil) laid inwards under pressure causing EASTWOOD and RED SAPPHIRE to be briefly crowded on his inside at the 150M. Jockey Z Khairil was shown the vision of the incident and warned that he must make greater effort to keep his mount straight in future.

RACE 2 (R445)         MAIDEN – 1600M (LONG COURSE A)

RICH AND SMART (Y Aify) jumped outwards, taking EAGLESHAM (SU Lim) outwards and causing JEFFREY (J Mallyon) to be crowded between EAGLESHAM and BIG MOTOR (HS Gill) which was himself crowded by BRILLIANT STAR in the first few strides.

BRILLIANT STAR (App J Daniel) jumped inwards, causing MAXIM DRAGON (App KC Wong) to be taken inwards shortly after the start. BIG MOTOR was thereafter crowded between MAXIM DRAGON and JEFFREY, and all three (3) horses became unbalanced as a result.

MUSANG KING (S Anandan) was observed to be over-racing in the early stages and was shifted outwards at about the 1400M by CRESCENDO (I Fadzlei) which rolled outwards.

At about the 800M, JEFFREY (J Mallyon) commenced to race greenly, laid inwards and then, in response to his rider’s attempt to correct, shifted abruptly outwards and became awkwardly placed on the heels of MAXIM DRAGON and was forced to check.

Approaching the 400M, MAXIM DRAGON was shifted inwards to obtain clear running but soon found himself crowded by JEFFREY on his inside and awkwardly placed on the heels of BIG MOTOR.

EAGLESHAM laid inwards under pressure in the final 150M.

At about the 100M, JEFFREY was disappointed for a run on the heels of BIG MOTOR.

Jockey I Fadzlei, the rider of CRESCENDO, reported post-race that his horse raced keenly in the stages.

Jockey S Anandan, the rider of MUSANG KING, also reported post-race that his horse raced keenly.

GASSUR (O Chavez) over-raced and got its head up in the early stages. When questioned, Jockey O Chavez reported that he had been unable to obtain cover and was therefore unable to settle the gelding. He added that he had reported to Trainer F Maynard that GASSUR may be better suited by a shorter distance in future.

READY TO ROCK (J De Souza) raced keenly in the early stages.

GHOST EMPEROR (C Goon) laid outwards at about the 550M and negotiated the bend with difficulty.

Approaching the 400M, MOGAN’S PRIDE (App KC Wong) shifted outwards under pressure despite the rider’s best efforts causing DAWN OF THE WORLD (App AK Lim) to be taken outwards in response and REAL MEAN (App CK Khaw) to shy away from DAWN OF THE WORLD.

At about the 500M, GOD HELPS ME was shifted outwards to obtain clear running and to avoid the heels of BLOOD ROYAL (SS Vanan).

From the 200M, LA FAMILIA shifted inwards under pressure.

Approaching the 50M, DAVINCI (F Yap) was angled outwards to obtain clear running.

When questioned, Jockey HS Gill, the rider of LIM’S BATTLE, stated that the gelding was outpaced and produced just a fair response to vigorous riding in the straight. He added that LIM’S BATTLE seemed rather flat. Trainer BT Lim stated that in his opinion, LIM’S BATTLE had struggled to cope with the step up in class. He also felt that the gelding may be feeling the effects of a busy schedule. The Stewards noted their explanations. A post-race veterinary examination of LIM’S BATTLE revealed no significant finding.

 RACE 5 (R448)         CLASS 5 – 1800M (LONG COURSE A)

Trainer C Leck was fined RM100/- under MRA Rule 65(5)(c) for failing to produce the declared colours on SPEED CRAFT.

SPEED CRAFT (M Zairi) stood still as the barrier opened and refused to move despite the rider’s urgings. In response to the rider’s attempts to make him start the race, SPEED CRAFT reared and dislodged Jockey M Zairi. The gelding will be required to pass 2 tests (1000M/vet from the starting stall tests at consecutive weekly intervals) before being declared to race again.

 RACE 6 (R449)         CLASS 3 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

 SUNGEI BESI AUTOWORLD CUP

SWEET LODGE (App WK Lee) was slow to begin,

NOBLE LIAISON (HS Gill) was slow to find its stride.

METIER STAR (J De Souza) jumped awkwardly outwards and bumped with RELAU STAR (J Mallyon).

At about the 1000M, NOBLE LIAISON rolled inwards as METIER STAR laid slightly outwards resulting in both horses making contact.

BADCOE (S Ruzaini) raced wide in the early stages.

LUCKY DAPPER (Z Khairil) raced wide in the middle stages in an attempt to make progress.

At about the 300M, METIER STAR was shifted outwards to obtain clear running between LUCKY DAPPER and GABBAR (O Chavez), however came across GABBAR when insufficiently clear causing GABBAR to ease for several strides.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey J De Souza, the rider of METIER STAR, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that at approximately the 300M mark, he crossed GABBAR (O Chavez) when insufficiently clear of that horse, causing GABBAR to be eased to avoid his heels.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey J De Souza’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of his suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 16 April 2018 and to expire on 22 April 2018, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (3:10pm).

 RACE 7 (R450)         CLASS 3 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

ROYAL EXPLORER (S Ruzaini) jumped inwards and bumped BROWCOW (HK Cheng).

BROWCOW was observed to be over-racing in the early stages. When questioned, Jockey HK Cheng reported that BROWCOW does have a tendency to race keenly and that the Trainer had instructed him not to push the horse to obtain an early position in case it became intractable. He therefore settled the horse in mid-to-back position but was content to do so as he felt that the early pace was fast. Jockey HK Cheng further stated that after several attempts to obtain clear running in the straight, he found himself disappointed for a run and raced in restricted room at about the 100M, and was therefore unable to fully test BROWCOW in the latter stages.

PALTROW (M Ganeesh) was soon outpaced in rear.

At about the 300M, ROYAL EXPLORER was angled outwards to obtain clear running on the outside of GADAWON (O Chavez) which shifted inwards.

At about the 200M, MR WOLFF (Y Aify) commenced to lay in under pressure causing LIM’S SPRINT (HS Gill) to be taken inwards in response.  Jockey Y Aify was shown the vision of the incident and warned that he would be expected to take appropriate measures to keep his horses straight in future.

At about the 150M, TAFFETAS (App L De Souza) laid outwards as THESE STREETS (App KC Wong) rolled inwards causing the tiring LAUS DEO (S Salee) to be briefly crowded between them.

At about the 100M, ROYAL EXPLORER laid outwards under pressure causing BROWCOW to be taken outwards and awkwardly placed on the heels of EN LAUDER (App CK Khaw).

A post-race veterinary examination of LAUS DEO revealed that the gelding bled and will be barred from racing for a period of three (3) months under MRA Rule 92(3) and thereafter will be required to pass a bleeder’s test before being declared to race again.

JJ STAR (App KC Wong) jumped awkwardly outwards and lost ground.

D’GREAT STRIKE (SS Vanan) laid inwards and raced greenly in the early stages.

ROYAL ACE (App L De Souza) raced greenly in the early stages causing SAKURA JAPAN (S Ruzaini) to be taken wide and BIG BUS (S Anandan) to shy away from SAKURA JAPAN. ROYAL ACE continued to race greenly with its head up in the middle stages.

TRUDEAU (J Mallyon) and ORDER OF THE SUN (M Zairi) were both slow to begin.

TRUDEAU raced keenly in the early stages and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of ARAGORN.

At about the 1000M, LISTEN (App AM Aizat) rolled inwards approaching the bend and bumped AL VALORE (App J Daniel). At this point, ORDER OF THE SUN was racing in restricted room on the inside of AL VALORE which was bumped inwards, and awkwardly placed on the heels of BLACK THORN (HS Gill).

Approaching the 100M, MR NEVERMIND (SU Lim) shifted in under pressure and crossed VOLCANIC GENERAL (S Ruzaini) when insufficiently clear causing the rider of VOLCANIC GENERAL to ease in order avoid his heels.

An objection was lodged by Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of VOLCANIC GENERAL, placed second, against MR NEVERMIND (SU Lim), the winner, on the grounds of alleged interference at about the 100M. After considering the evidence, the Racing Stewards determined that the alleged interference had affected the chances of VOLCANIC GENERAL and the objection was upheld. The placings were amended to read:

No. 1 – VOLCANIC GENERAL (S Ruzaini)

No. 2 – MR NEVERMIND (SU Lim)

No. 3 – SHOWBOY (O Chavez)

No. 4 – TIDAL WAVE (J De Souza)

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey SU Lim, the rider of MR NEVERMIND, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that at about the 100M, he crossed VOLCANIC GENERAL when insufficiently clear.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey SU Lim’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of his suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 16 April 2018 and to expire on 22 April 2018, both dates inclusive. GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

RACE 1 (R433) CLASS 5 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A), SATURDAY, 7 APRIL 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB APRIL MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 8 April 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into an incident approaching the 100M. Evidence was taken from App L De Souza, the rider ELF’S DREAM, in the presence of his Master, Trainer R Lines who is also the Trainer of ELF’S DREAM.

App L De Souza, the rider of ELF’S DREAM, in the presence of his Master, Trainer R Lines, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that he allowed his horse to shift inwards when insufficiently clear of MACHUNG STAR (SU Lim) which was eased and lost momentum.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App L De Souza’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 9 April 2018 and to expire on 15 April 2018, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (11:40am).

RACE 11 (R443) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 7 APRIL 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB APRIL MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 8 April 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of SUPER JOY. Evidence was taken from App N Varmah, the rider of SUPER JOY, in the presence of his Master, Trainer C Leck who is also the Trainer of SUPER JOY.

Trainer C Leck stated that before the race, he considered SUPER JOY to have the weakest chance of his three (3) runners. He therefore instructed App N Varmah to move across to take the lead if LONESOME ME (R Woodworth) did not do so, in the hope of stealing the race from the front.

App N Varmah stated that SUPER JOY had demonstrated sufficient pace to easily take the lead but had thereafter over-raced in the middle stages, resulting in a disappointing response in the straight.

The Stewards noted their explanations.

RACE 11 (R443) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 7 APRIL 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB APRIL MEETING 2018

The Stewards questioned Trainer C Leck about the apparent improved performance of the winner, ARLO (S Ruzaini). Trainer C Leck reported that ARLO had been badly out of form for some time and had become well handicapped as a result. However, the gelding had displayed recent signs of a revival in his trackwork and a Barrier Practice. He added that ARLO may also have been suited by the rain-affected track and therefore the result did not come as a complete surprise to him, although he had preferred the chance of ARLO’s stablemate, HERECOMESMYMONEY (SU Lim). The Stewards noted his explanation.

ADDENDUM

RACE 9 (R412) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 31 MARCH 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB MARCH MEETING 2018

The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of ARIEL and evidence was taken from Jockey Lou Ho and Trainer F Maynard, the rider and Trainer of ARIEL respectively.

Jockey Lou Ho stated that the horse habitually finds less than expected at the end of his races, and that he had discussed the possibility of changing tactics in this race with Trainer F Maynard. They had agreed that if TILSWORTH MALI (M Ganeesh) did not take the lead, he would allow ARIEL to do so.

Trainer F Maynard confirmed these instructions, adding that ARIEL has been a frustrating type and that he was willing to try new tactics to help the gelding break his maiden. However, on this occasion he felt that ARIEL had over-raced in the early stages and produced a disappointing response in the straight as a result.

The Stewards noted their explanations.
