GENERAL REPORT – SLTC
RACE 10 (R1317) CLASS 4 (B) – 1300M (LONG COURSE B), SUNDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2018
The Stewards, on 23rd October 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, enquired into the running and handling of MR CONNERY in the above race. They interviewed Apprentice WW Cheah, in the presence of his Master, Trainer R Lines, who is also the trainer of MR CONNERY.
Trainer R Lines stated that MR CONNERY is a horse who benefits from patient riding and needs further than the 1300M distance of this race. He explained that he had instructed App WW Cheah to ride the horse from the back of the field. App WW Cheah stated that he had been instructed to make his move at about the 600M and he did so by angling to the outside and asking MR CONNERY for an effort. He added that the gelding had commenced to lay inwards at about the 400M and he therefore decided to ride him with hands and heels in order to maintain a straight line.
The Stewards noted these explanations and also noted Trainer R Lines’ admission that MR CONNERY is a quirky horse and perhaps, in hindsight, not an easy ride for a very inexperienced apprentice. Trainer Lines was informed that in future App WW Cheah would only be allowed to accept rides that the Stewards deemed to be suitable. App WW Cheah was warned that in future he must ride all his mounts in such a manner as to leave no room for query.
RACE 2 (R1309) CLASS 5 (A) – 1400M (LONG COURSE B), SUNDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2018
On 23rd October 2018, the Stewards inquired into the conduct of Trainer SY Lim before Race 2 on 21st October 2018. He had informed a Stipendiary Steward prior to the race that WE’RE THE WORLD, normally a forward runner, would be ridden from midfield and an announcement was made to that effect for the benefit of the betting public. However, in the race itself, WE’RE THE WORLD jumped alertly, took the lead in the early stages, was never headed thereafter and won by two lengths.
Trainer SY Lim stated that he had been attempting to comply with his responsibilities under MRA Rule 35(8) and it was not his intention to mislead. He had, in fact, instructed App WK Lee to ride WE’RE THE WORLD from midfield as he felt that the gelding would struggle to obtain a forward position from the outside barrier. He had further instructed App WK Lee to allow WE’RE THE WORLD to stride forward or even take the lead if it proved difficult to settle. He accepted that he had only communicated the first part of those instructions to Stipendiary Steward Nigel Chong.
Trainer SY Lim pleaded guilty to a charge of negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) in that when notifying the Stewards of his intention for WE’RE THE WORLD to be ridden in a manner different from its most recent start or starts, he did so in a manner that caused the Stewards to give out incorrect information. He was fined RM250/-.
