GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

RACE 6 (R0574) SUPREME C – 1600M (LC A6), SATURDAY, 15 JUNE 2024, SELANGOR TURF CLUB JUNE MEETING 2024

The Stewards, on Thursday, 20 June 2024 at SLTC, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of SEMANTAN PRINCE and took evidence from Jockey R Shafiq and Trainer S Dunderdale, the rider and trainer of SEMANTAN PRINCE respectively.

The Stewards reviewed the films of the incident and considered the evidence tendered. Jockey R Shafiq, the rider of SEMANTAN PRINCE, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge being that in Race 6 on 15 June 2024 at the Selangor Turf Club, he failed to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards in that:

  1. Despite having the opportunity to shift outside runners and into the clear, entering the straight, he shifted his mount in against its winning pattern, despite there being no clear running for him and multiple horses ahead racing in the running line and/or near the inside rail;

  2. When a run appears for him leaving the 550M, between the 550M and the 150M, his riding was passive, non-vigourous, lacking in intent and a deviation from the norm; and

  3. Throughout the straight, he failed to and/or at the very least attempt to obtain a position for his mount which affords it the best opportunity to obtain clear running. With the consequences of such positioning being that SEMANTAN PRINCE became baulked for a clear run inside the 150M and races to the line untested and not fully extended.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey R Shafiq’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) months with effect from 24 July 2024 and to expire on 23 September 2024, both dates inclusive, to be served consecutively with any other penalty. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

RACE FOR FAME

(O Chavez)

Slow to begin. Hung inwards in the straight. An Inquiry will be opened in order to establish why the gelding had to ease approaching the 1200M.

BE YOURSELF (HS Gill) was inconvenienced on at least 2 occasions from the 200M when awkwardly placed on the inside of CHIEF OF ARMY (SU Lim) which shifted in away from the whip marginally and thereafter was carried in by MGR ROCKET (Z Khairil) which was hanging inwards in the straight and shifted in away from the whip.

A race review was called into this incident, which was followed by an objection being lodged by Jockey HS Gill (BE YOURSELF), the rider of the fourth placed horse against the third placed horse, MGR ROCKET (Z Khairil) on the grounds of interference from the 200M.

After considering the evidence in this matter, the Panel overruled the objection and allowed the judge’s result to stand as from the footage, it could not be established that but for the incident, BE YOURSELF would have finished ahead of MGR ROCKET.

AMENDMENT

RACE 8 (R0543) OPEN MAIDEN – 1020M (Track II +6), SUNDAY, 2 JUNE 2024, SELANGOR TURF CLUB JUNE MEETING 2024

A race review was called into this incident, which was followed by an objection being lodged by Jockey J Daniel (CHARMING WIN), the rider of the second placed horse against the winner, GULF EAGLE (S Ruzaini) on the grounds of interference in the straight.

After considering the evidence in this matter, the Board overruled the objection. In arriving at this decision, the Board considered that it appeared at all times down the straight that GULF EAGLE would race passed CHARMING WIN, notwithstanding the afore- mentioned incident.

Consequently, the Board was satisfied that but for the above incident, CHARMING WIN would not have finished ahead of GULF EAGLE, therefore it overruled the objection and allowed the Judge’s result to stand.

Jockey B Pinheiro (MILITARY FLAG) appeared before the Panel and was questioned regarding any factors, which in his opinion, contributed to the defeat of his horse and it performing below market expectations (RM7/-). He explained that after MILITARY FLAG’s last run where from a wide draw, he sat wide, showed pace and finished well, he was confident the horse could obtain an even better forward position today just behind the speed from its good draw. Jockey B Pinheiro explained that he was satisfied with his position in the run as the pace was fast, however, as the leaders had kicked clear, he commenced to ask MILITARY FLAG to build, however, he was unable to make ground on the leader, which in his opinion, was aided by today’s fast track. He further explained that in the concluding stages, after asking MILITARY FLAG to sustain a long run from the 600M, this horse had peaked on the run. He further stated that MILITARY FLAG may prefer further and a slightly slower run race, where it can relax early and easily get into a rhythm.

Trainer S Dunderdale was questioned regarding the performance of MILITARY FLAG. In this regard, he confirmed the statements of Jockey B Pinheiro with regards to the horse not appreciating the fast pace of today’s race and getting out of his ground in the middle stages particularly on a track, which in his opinion, was running fast and favouring horses that were in front. In his opinion, this was the reason why MILITARY FLAG was unable to make up ground as usual.

Trainer KC Tiang appeared before the Panel and was questioned regarding his instructions on PACIFIC EMPIRE. In this regard, he explained that his instructions to App R Nuqman were to race this horse with cover in a handy position as it was his view that this gelding failed to finish off its races when horses run passed it.

Trainer KC Tiang’s attention was drawn to the fact that in this horse’s last run and in its recent runs, it had been ridden to either hold the lead on the inside or pressure the pace from the outside. Additionally, it was further drawn to his attention that, the lack of intent from App R Nuqman, which coincided with his instructions, amounted to a deviation from the hold or pressure the lead tactics adopted in PACIFIC EMPIRE’s recent runs.  Consequently, Trainer KC Tiang was found guilty of a contravention of MRA Rule 35(8) and a penalty of RM1000/- was imposed.

6

LITTLE PONY

(App H Haikal)

Raced wide in the early stages. Hung inwards and shifted in away from the whip in the straight.

In the concluding stages, MOMENT OF JUSTICE had to ease sharply when awkwardly placed on the inside of MONTANA FLASH which shifted in away from the whip.

A race review was called into this incident, which was followed by an objection being lodged by Jockey B Pinheiro (MOMENT OF JUSTICE), the rider of the fourth placed horse against the third placed horse, MONTANA FLASH (Z Khairil) on the grounds of interference in the concluding stages. After considering the evidence in this matter, the Board upheld the objection. In arriving at this decision, the Board considered that in particular from the side-on angle, it was evident that at the point when the incident had occurred, MOMENT OF JUSTICE was about to definitively run passed MONTANA FLASH, however, this gelding shifted in causing MOMENT OF JUSTICE to ease and lose significant momentum and distance, which distance, was subsequently reduced again to 1.75 length at the finish when MOMENT OF JUSTICE was placed into clear running.

Consequently, the Board was satisfied that but for the above incident, MOMENT OF JUSTICE would have finished ahead of MONTANA FLASH, therefore it upheld the objection and amended the Judge’s result to read:

1st –  MAINSTREAM (App A Nazir)

2nd – NORDIC GEM (App M Lukman)

3rd – MOMENT OF JUSTICE (B Pinheiro)

4th – MONTANA FLASH (Z Khairil)

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey Z Khairil, the rider of MONTANA FLASH, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that whilst riding MONTANA FLASH in this race, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to MOMENT OF JUSTICE in the concluding stages.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey Z Khairil’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of 1 (one) Selangor Turf Club race day with effect from 27 May 2024 and to expire on 2 June 2024, both dates inclusive.  In lieu of two (2) Selangor Turf Club race days, he was also fined RM3,000/.  He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

RACE 8 (R0492) CLASS 5A – 1020M (Track II), SATURDAY, 18 MAY 2024, SELANGOR TURF CLUB MAY MEETING 2024

The Stewards, on Sunday, 26 May 2024, inquired into App H Haikal’s riding of MAGIC HERO in the above race. Evidence was taken from App H Haikal, in the presence of his Trainer’s representative, Assistant Trainer Lai Jek Shen.

After considering the evidence and also reviewing the performance of MAGIC HERO, App H Haikal was charged under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge being that in Race 8 run at the Selangor Turf Club on Saturday, 18 May 2024, he failed to ride MAGIC HERO to the satisfaction of the Stewards in that from the jump, he adopted an unreasonably tight hold which did not afford this gelding the best opportunity to obtain a good break. As a consequence of his actions, MAGIC HERO jumped awkwardly, threw its head up, lost ground and he became unbalanced for a short period, all of which prejudiced the gelding’s opportunity in the race.

App H Haikal pleaded not guilty to the charge, however, was found guilty as charged. In mitigation, the Stewards took into consideration App H Haikal’s riding record, mitigating factors and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) months with effect from 27 May 2024 and to expire on 26 July 2024, both dates inclusive. He was also fined RM10,000/- and advised of his Right of Appeal.

Jockey J Daniel (ICHIKA BACHIKA) appeared before the Panel and was questioned separately regarding his riding instructions. In this regard, he advised that his instructions were to ride this horse in order to obtain a handy position from the jump.

Trainer S Dunderdale appeared before the Panel and was questioned regarding his instructions on ICHIKA BACHIKA. In this regard, he explained that his instructions to Jockey J Daniel were that this horse has a history of jumping moderately, therefore he was instructed to ride this horse in a manner that afforded it an opportunity to obtain a forward position. The Stewards drew Trainer S Dunderdale’s attention to the lack of similar intent in this gelding’s recent runs. Trainer S Dunderdale explained that today, the better track and a better rider were, in his opinion, a contributory factor to ICHIKA BACHIKA racing in a position that it did in the race.

The Panel noted the explanation of Trainer S Dunderdale, however, was of the view that as similar intent from the jump could not be established from the riding of this gelding in its last 4 runs, the instructions today were tantamount to a change of tactics. Consequently, Trainer S Dunderdale was found guilty of a contravention of MRA Rule 35(8) and a penalty of RM1000/- was imposed.

In this regard, he explained that his instructions were to sit in a handy position, however, after jumping as well as he did, he did not want to risk being caught wide and instead elected to commit his horse to a forward position which resulted in an unanticipated lead.

Trainer R Lines (SESON) appeared before the Panel separately and was questioned regarding his instructions on SESON. In this regard, he explained that he had instructed Jockey J Daniel to obtain a forward position and he had not specifically instructed him to lead, however, after jumping, he found it acceptable that Jockey J Daniel continued to commit SESON forward as failing to do so, would have resulted in him being trapped wide. The Stewards noted the explanation of Trainer R Lines.

Unable to secure clear running in the concluding stages and had to ease on at least 2 occasions.

Jockey Z Khairil (THE STORM) appeared before the Panel of Stewards, and was shown the patrol films of the race and questioned regarding the indecisive nature of his riding in the early stages. His attention was specifically drawn to the fact that the form of this horse suggested that it races in a handy position, however, upon jumping, there appeared to be no intent to either go back and take cover nor go forward and obtain a handy position on this horse. Jockey Z Khairil explained that his instructions were to obtain cover from a deep draw and that he had anticipated with this being a sprint race, he would be able to slot in behind the front runners as the pace would be fast in the early stages. However upon jumping the pace was not as quick as he had anticipated which resulted in him being positioned wider than he preferred. He further explained that once trapped wide, he did not want to concede further ground and elected to allow his mount to stride forward in the running. Jockey Z Khairil was further questioned regarding the stride of his horse in the straight where it appeared that his mount raced awkwardly. In this regard, he explained that this horse had previously had a tendon issue and therefore had a tendency to overreach and change legs in races as well as in training. The Panel noted the explanations of Jockey Z Khairil.

Jockey O Chavez (JOJU) appeared before the Stewards and was questioned regarding the vigour of his riding in the concluding stages of the race. In this regard, he explained that at the points of concern of the Stewards, JOJU had taken a number of awkward strides and its head had dipped in the running, this resulted in him correcting and balancing his mount prior to continuing to riding it out to the finish. Additionally, he explained that after travelling comfortably and obtaining the lead, this mare had lost concentration in the running which contributed to PACIFIC WINDSOR defeating it on the line. In support of his statements, Jockey Chavez referred the Stewards to the ears of JOJU which at the point of concern of the Stewards, were flicking back and forth. The Stewards noted the explanation of Jockey O Chavez which were supported by the patrol films of the race. However, Jockey Chavez was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out with the requisite vigour to the end of the race so as to leave no room for query by the Stewards.

Jockey KC Tham was examined by the Club Doctor who subsequently stood him down from his riding engagement for his remainder rides.

However, upon jumping, PACIFIC RIVER had not shown the speed that she had anticipated. Notwithstanding, her encouraging this gelding to challenge for the lead. Accordingly, she elected to take up the position outside the leader and trail it into the race. Upon entering the straight, she explained that PACIFIC RIVER had failed to produce any significant finishing burst and just stayed on to the finish. It was App PH Seow’s opinion that this gelding had been impacted by the softness of the track and it was likely that its comparative advantage that is, its early speed was blunted by the track conditions. The Stewards took note of the explanations of App PH Seow and ordered that PACIFIC RIVER be subjected to a veterinary examination.

He further explained that this gelding did have some fair form in Singapore prior to coming to Malaysia and whilst he was surprised by the win, he was of the opinion that this gelding had merely run to his better Singapore form today.

Trainer CC Ooi further explained that there was no change to this horse’s feeding or training and confirmed that this gelding would continue to be ridden similarly, that is; aggressively from the jump, in future runs where practical.
