GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

RACE 9 (R412) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 31 MARCH 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB MARCH MEETING 2018

The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of ARIEL and evidence was taken from Jockey Lou Ho and Trainer F Maynard, the rider and Trainer of ARIEL respectively.

Jockey Lou Ho stated that the horse habitually finds less than expected at the end of his races, and that he had discussed the possibility of changing tactics in this race with Trainer F Maynard. They had agreed that if TILSWORTH MALI (M Ganeesh) did not take the lead, he would allow ARIEL to do so.

Trainer F Maynard confirmed these instructions, adding that ARIEL has been a frustrating type and that he was willing to try new tactics to help the gelding break his maiden. However, on this occasion he felt that ARIEL had over-raced in the early stages and produced a disappointing response in the straight as a result.

AMENDMENT

SELANGOR TURF CLUB MARCH MEETING 2019

SUNDAY, 31 MARCH 2019

STATE OF TRACK: Yielding (Races 1 to 4), upgraded to “Good” after Race 4.

Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:

Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward).

RACE 1 (R394)         CLASS 5 (A) – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)

WINNING TANGO (M Ganeesh) jumped awkwardly inwards and almost dislodged Jockey M Ganeesh. After jumping inwards, WINNING TANGO bumped MORALES (Z Khairil) and then shifted further inwards and bumped ELEGANT DANCER (KC Wong) inwards towards SWIFT (S Salee), which brushed with ORION (App CK Khaw). At this point, ORION was turned outwards and crowded SWIFT.

When questioned, Jockey M Ganeesh stated that shortly before the gate opened, WINNING TANGO commenced to lean against the right hand side of the barrier. In attempting to edge his mount inwards, he took his right hand off the rein and attempted to use the framework of the stalls as leverage. The gate opened when he was not fully ready causing him to become very unbalanced as WINNING TANGO jumped forward.

After reviewing this incident, the Stewards accepted that Jockey M Ganeesh’s intention was to straighten his mount and obtain a good jump in order to take the lead, but severely cautioned him and warned him that under similar circumstances in future, he must ask the Starter for assistance and must not take his hands off the reins while in the barrier.

MORALES which suffered interference at the jump, was slow to find its stride.

Shortly after the jump, App WW Cheah, the rider of KARIGARA, attempted to steer his mount inwards from his wide barrier. At this point, KARIGARA laid abruptly inwards and brushed with COLONEL LINCOLN (J Low) and Jockey J Low was forced to take evasive action.

COLONEL LINCOLN was forced wide in the middle stages.

At about the 400M, ELEGANT DANCER laid inwards under pressure and reacted abruptly to one strike of the whip, forcing Jockey KC Wong to ease and correct.

At about the 400M, the whips of App WW Cheah, the rider of KARIGARA, and Jockey J Low, the rider of COLONEL LINCOLN became entangled causing Jockey J Low to drop his whip.

COLONEL LINCOLN, SWIFT and MORALES which were beaten 16 1/4, 16 1/4 and 22 1/4 lengths respectively, will each be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having poor performances.

PLATOON (HK Cheng) got its head up on jumping but broke on terms.

LIM’S BATTLE (HS Gill) was slow to find its stride.

IDEAL GUIDE (App WW Cheah) raced wide in the middle stages and HIGH TENSILE (App CC Wong) was forced to race wide, and to switch around IDEAL GUIDE in order to commence his run at the 500M.

Approaching the 400M, NEVERSAYNEVER (S Muniandy) was disappointed for a run on the heels of THE JEUNEYMAN (Y Aify).

Between the 400M and the 250M, IDEAL GUIDE was disappointed for a run on the heels of SHOWAR (S Ruzaini).

Approaching the 100M, CUBAN HEEL (App L De Souza) had to be guided into a narrow gap between WILLIAM KING (C Goon) on his inside and NEVERSAYNEVER on his outside.

A post-race veterinary examination of PLATOON revealed no significant finding. PLATOON which was beaten 17 1/2 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for a poor performance.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey C Goon, the rider of WILLIAM KING, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that he failed to allow sufficient space for CUBAN HEEL (App L De Souza) to his inside approaching the 500M, causing CUBAN HEEL to be tightened against the rail and unbalanced.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey C Goon’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of his suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 8 April 2019 and to expire on 14 April 2019, both dates inclusive. – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)

Approaching the 1100M, as the pace slowed, D’GREAT RICH (App CC Wong) was eased off the heels of MORE POWER (J De Souza).

CONFEAT (O Chavez) laid inwards under pressure from approaching the 200M.

The State of Track was upgraded to “Good” after the running of this race.

The Stewards enquired into the running and handling of CONFEAT (O Chavez). Jockey O Chavez stated that the gelding had raced three times, winning once, and on the other two occasions he was taken to the lead before tiring in the concluding stages. He therefore felt it was imperative to ride CONFEAT with patience and enable him to relax and save his energy, particularly as this race was over the longest distance he has tackled. He communicated this to the Owner, Navaneethasingham a/l A Ratnasingham, in the parade ring just prior to the race. He stated that he did not receive any particular riding instructions from Trainer SB Tan and therefore proceeded to ride CONFEAT in his preferred manner. Trainer SB Tan stated that his intention was for CONFEAT to be positioned in the “box seat” position just behind the leaders, but admitted that he relied on an assistant to communicate these instructions to Jockey O Chavez who did not receive them.

Jockey O Chavez further explained that he had struggled to settle CONFEAT, as there was little cover available in the small field and he felt that it would be unsafe to take the available position between AIR POWER and FULL BET, as he would have put himself in danger of running on to heels. He added that CONFEAT eventually relaxed at about the 900m and finished well when he commenced his effort from the 400m.

Trainer SB Tan pronounced himself satisfied with the ride given in the circumstances. The attention of all parties was drawn to the provisions of MRA Rule 117(4) which specifies that the jockey’s instructions must come from the Trainer, not the Owner. The Stewards otherwise accepted the explanations tendered.

Jockey O Chavez also mentioned that the fitting of a cross-nose band, which was intended to stop CONFEAT over-racing, may have backfired as the gelding seemed uncomfortable with this new gear. Trainer SB Tan was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for failing to declare the use of cross-nose band within the prescribed time.

 RACE 5 (R398)         OPEN MAIDEN – 1600M (LONG COURSE A)

MOONSHINE MISTRESS (J Mallyon) and LIGHTNING HERO (App A Suriya) were both slow to begin.

DONT MIND IFIDO (O Chavez) was allowed to settle forward into the lead but over-raced and failed to settle. When questioned, Jockey O Chavez reported that DONT MIND IFIDO was hard to control throughout the race and had tried to run out from the 800M. In the event, he felt it was prudent to ease the gelding in the concluding stages. The gelding which was beaten 16 1/4 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having difficult racing manners.

Approaching the 1200M, LIGHTNING HERO commenced to over-race, shifted inwards and brushed with BEAUTIFUL ONE (App S Uzair).

From the 600M, DONT MIND IFIDO laid outwards and negotiated the bend with difficulty causing LIM’S KEYWAY (C Goon), ROMAN WELLS (App N Varmah) and LIGHTNING HERO to be taken outwards in turn and forced wide around the bend.

LIGHTNING HERO was forced to race wide in order to make progress in the middle stages. At about the 200M, LIGHTNING HERO commenced to lay inwards under pressure.

I HAVE A DREAM (S Muniandy) which was beaten 19 3/4 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

RACE 6 (R399)         CLASS 4 (A) – 1600M (LONG COURSE A)

PARISBAS (HS Gill) jumped outwards and brushed with REAL MEAN (J De Souza) which was turned inwards. PARISBAS was bumped back inwards by REAL MEAN and lost its early position as a consequence. Shortly afterwards, PARISBAS ran onto the heels of REAL MEAN, clipped heels and dipped. Jockey J De Souza was shown the vision of these 2 incidents and warned by the Stewards that if bumped by a rival, he may hold his line but must never attempt to retaliate. He was also warned to respect the 2-length standard when crossing rivals.

PARISBAS laid outwards from the 600M and negotiated the bend with difficulty.

Approaching the 500M, SACRED EMPIRE (App CC Wong) was disappointed for a run on the heels of BLOOD ROYAL (KC Wong) and was shifted outwards and forfeited ground.

Approaching the 400M, BLOOD ROYAL had to be angled outwards to obtain a clear run on the outside of BACK TO THE TOWERS (S Anandan) but laid inwards. Approaching the 300M, BLOOD ROYAL commenced to lay persistently inwards and continued to do so until the finish causing Jockey KC Wong to ease and correct on several occasions.

At about the 200M, TURQUOISE KING (S Salee) laid inwards under pressure towards the rail causing M SEVEN (App CK Khaw) which was following, to be shifted outwards for a clear passage.

HERO CHAMPION (S Ruzaini) which was beaten 29 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination of HERO CHAMPION revealed no significant finding.

SUNGAI BESI AUTOWORLD CUP

Jockey O Chavez, the rider of BROTHER WIND, was fined RM1000/- under MRA Rule 121(7) for weighing in 1kg over his declared weight. He admitted that he had consumed liquids after weighing out.

FIRST PRECINCT (App CK Khaw) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 200M, BROTHER WIND (O Chavez) was angled outwards to progress into a gap between AUSONE (App A Suriya) and SHOQEET (S Ruzaini) but as that gap narrowed approaching the 150M, BROTHER WIND was shifted abruptly inwards to obtain an alternative run against the rail.

SHOQEET laid inwards under pressure between the 200M and the 100M.

When questioned regarding the improved performance shown by SHOQEET, Trainer F Maynard stated that his was the gelding’s second run in this current preparation, having returned from an 8-month spell after transfer from Singapore. He added that SHOQEET was better suited by the longer distance of today’s race as compared to 1200M previously.

TILSWORTH FREDDIE (S Anandan) which dislodged its rider and ran loose, was apprehended and withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 3:36pm. The gelding will be required to pass a 1000M/vet (from the starting stall) test before being declared to race again.

HIP HIP HOORAY (S Muniandy) raced wide in the middle stages.

Approaching the 200M, NOVA FALCON (S Ruzaini) commenced to lay inwards away from the whip and in doing so, caused LA FAMILIA (R Woodworth) to be briefly eased at about the 150M.

Between the 200M and the 100M, SPLENDOR (O Chavez) had to shift outwards to obtain clear passage on the outside of NOVA FALCON.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey R Woodworth, the rider of LA FAMILIA, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that approaching the 800M, he crossed LIM’S CASINO (HS Gill) when not sufficiently clear causing LIM’S CASINO to be checked.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey R Woodworth’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysia and Singapore race days, with effect from 1 April 2019 and to expire on 6 April 2019, both dates inclusive. Jockeys M Ganeesh and S Ruzaini, the rider of HK DOLLAR and EXCITING PROSPECT respectively, were each fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for supplying the wrong saddle cloth numbers to the Trainers’ representatives when passing the saddles for weighing out. This resulted in HK DOLLAR and EXCITING PROSPECT having to be resaddled and delayed their progress to the start.

SONG KID (App L De Souza) jumped outwards and bumped SEA HORIZON (App KC Wong) which in turn bumped FULL MEANING (Lou Ho).

SEA HORIZON over-raced without cover between the 1300M and the 1000M.

At about the 250M, DEE MAJULAH (S Ipek) edged outwards causing MAGIC RANGER (HS Gill) to be momentarily crowded on the inside of EXCITING PROSPECT (S Ruzaini).

At about the 250M, EXCITING PROSPECT commenced to lay inwards under pressure and at about the 200M, caused DEE MAJULAH to be taken inwards which resulted in JUST VITAL (Z Khairil) being crowded between DEE MAJULAH and NOVA ACE (SU Lim). JUST VITAL was forced to check and was subsequently switched outwards to obtain clear running.

An objection was lodged by Jockey Z Khairil, the rider of JUST VITAL, placed fourth, against DEE MAJULAH (S Ipek) placed third, on the grounds of alleged interference at about the 100M mark.

After considering the evidence, the Racing Stewards were of the opinion that the alleged interference had affected the chances of JUST VITAL. The objection was upheld and the placings were amended to read:

No. 1 – EXCITING PROSPECT (S Ruzaini)

No. 2 – NOVA ACE (SU Lim)

No. 3 – JUST VITAL (Z Khairil)

No. 4 – DEE MAJULAH (S Ipek)

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of EXCITING PROSPECT, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that he allowed his horse to drift inwards from the 250M causing DEE MAJULAH to be taken inwards which resulted in JUST VITAL being crowded on his inside.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey S Ruzaini’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of Jockey S Ruzaini’s suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 19 March 2018 and to expire on 25 March 2018, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (3:10pm).

FULL MEANING which was beaten 24 ¼ lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/Vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of EXCITING PROSPECT, Trainer C Leck stated that he was surprised by the gelding’s performance and could not confidently explain what had caused the improvement. The Stewards noted his explanation.

RACE 3 (R322)         CLASS 4 – 1400M (LONG COURSE D)

KISS ME (App WK Lee) which dislodged its rider on the way to the start and galloped a considerable distance, was withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 1:51pm. The gelding will be required to pass a 1000M/vet (from the starting stall, to be ridden unaided to the start) test before being declared to race again.

LIM’S GREETING (C Goon) was slow to begin.

SPIN FIRE (M Ganeesh) raced wide from the 1000M to the 500M.

At about the 350M, NOVA RANGER (S Ruzaini) was disappointed for a run as GASSUR (O Chavez) momentarily shifted outwards.

Jockey S Ipek, the rider of SAND BANK, eased his horse in the final 100M, losing fifth place. Jockey S Ipek was shown the film of his ride and was reminded of his obligation  under MRA Rule 44(6) that in future he would be expected to ride his horse out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards, failing which action may be taken against him.

REPORT OF ANALYSIS ON NON-RACE DAY SAMPLE

The report dated 1 March 2018 (NRD/V18/002) from the Chief Analyst of Veterinary Forensic Laboratory stated that 1 bottle of coded jockey urine sample was received on 19 February 2018, for analysis under the MRA Rules and Regulations and that Sample Coded “J-3495” indicates the presence of “Dextromethorphan.”

Upon decoding, it was established that the abovementioned sample belonged to A Farezul (Muhammad Farezul Bin Aziz) and that it had been produced on 2nd February 2018 when A Farezul was required by the Stewards, exercising their powers under MRA Rule 136(2), to supply a urine sample. The sample coded “J-3495” was stored in accordance with the provisions of MRA regulation 29.5 between 2nd February and the first weekend of the Selangor February meeting, whereupon it was securely dispatched to the Veterinary Forensic Laboratory alongside the race day samples collected over that weekend.

At the time of supplying the sample, A Farezul was a Senior Track Rider registered to Trainer C Leck. However on 8th February 2018 Trainer Leck informed the Racing Office at Selangor Turf Club that Farezul was no longer employed by him. An Inquiry into this matter will be held on a date to be fixed.

RACE 1 (R257) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SUNDAY, 25 FEBRUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 11 March 2018 (Sunday) at the Selangor Turf Club, enquired into the running and handling of BEIJING STAR (F Yap) which was heavily restrained leaving the stalls and raced in rear before making some late progress.

Jockey F Yap stated that on jumping, BEIJING STAR threw its head up slightly and that he was not expecting this, having never ridden the horse before. As a consequence, Jockey F Yap took a tight grip of the horse’s head to regain his own balance.

Trainer WC Lim stated that BEIJING STAR has a tendency to throw its head up at the start and that he had neglected to inform Jockey F Yap of this.

The Stewards noted their explanations.

RACE 4 (R250) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 11 March 2018 (Sunday) at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of ASTRO MAN. Evidence was taken from Jockey M Ganeesh and Trainer SY Lim, the rider and Trainer of ASTRO MAN respectively.

Jockey M Ganeesh stated that although it was his intention to obtain a midfield position, he was distracted by JANGO (J Mallyon) on his outside which threatened to shift inwards and crowd him at about the 1000M. He therefore eased in anticipation, allowing JUST DUIT (S Sandana) to cross to the rail in front of him at the 900M. Thereafter, ASTRO MAN was placed in a mid-to-back position with no opportunity to improve until the straight.

Jockey M Ganeesh further added that ASTRO MAN had changed his legs approaching the 200M, at which point he attempted to shift outwards into a gap between SUNTZU (Z Khairil) and FLYING NEKO (R Woodworth). At about the 150M, ASTRO MAN changed his legs again and so he rode with less vigour for a few strides, for fear that he might become unbalanced and bump another horse.

The Stewards noted these explanations but warned Jockey M Ganeesh that in future he must be seen to take all permissible measures to give his mounts the best chance of obtaining the best possible placing.

RACE 8 (R264)          CLASS 4 – 1800M (LONG COURSE A)

                                    MYDORA CUP

The start was delayed as ENCOSTA ZONE (Z Khairil) was difficult to be loaded. The mare will be required to pass a 1000M/vet (from the starting stall) test before being declared to race again.

At about the 1100M, FAST RICH (S Sandana) crossed to the rail in front of ENCOSTA ZONE when not clear, causing ENCOSTA ZONE to check and NOVA POWER (S Ruzaini) which was behind ENCOSTA ZONE, to be checked in turn.

The Stewards enquired into this incident and heard evidence from Jockey S Sandana, the rider of FAST RICH, that his mount was over-racing and that he had taken evasive action in order to avoid running onto the heels of BLOOD ROYAL (App AK Lim). The Stewards established that no particular rider was to be blamed for this incident and as such the Stewards deemed it as a racing incident.

At about the 1600M, NOVA POWER (S Ruzaini) commenced to over-race and refused to settle in rear.

Between the 300M and the 200M, KARIGARA (App L De Souza) laid inwards under pressure, forcing the jockey to ease and correct the drift. KARIGARA subsequently shifted abruptly away from the left hand whip, and shifted out between the 200M and the 100M.

RACE 9 (R265)         CLASS 3 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)

HAWAIIAN KING (App W Faizal) turned outwards on jumping, briefly lost its footing, became unbalanced and was slow to find its stride as a consequence.

At the 1300M, BROWCOW (HK Cheng) commenced to over-race and shift outwards whereupon it continued to over-race without cover until the 1000M.

At about the 1200M, LIM’S SPRINT (App P Haris) threw its head up in response to being crossed by MR WOLFF (I Saifudin).

At about the 500M, LIM’S SPRINT began to lay outwards and despite the jockey’s efforts, brushed with LUCKY DAPPER (Z Khairil) at about the 400M, causing LUCKY DAPPER and MR WOLFF to be carried slightly outwards. LIM’S SPRINT continued to lay out under pressure until the finish, on several occasions coming close to LUCKY DAPPER. App P Haris, the rider of LIM’S SPRINT, was shown the vision of the incident and advised by the Stewards that under similar circumstances in future, he should attempt to switch his whip hand.

At about the 200M, HAWAIIAN KING laid outwards under pressure causing the jockey to ease and correct.

At about the 75M, LIM’S SPRINT shifted abruptly outwards when shying away from HAWAIIAN KING. This caused LUCKY DAPPER to be taken outwards and MR WOLFF to be eased to avoid the heels of LUCKY DAPPER.

RED EMPRESS (App P Haris) was slow to begin.

In the early stages, SHARP BLADE (S Ruzaini) was bumped by MUSANG KING (S Sandana) which was carried inwards by FIREPUBLICGAME (R Woodworth). Jockey R Woodworth was shown the vision of the incident and warned by the Stewards to take more care when shifting inwards shortly after the start.

From the 250M, SHARP BLADE commenced to lay outwards under pressure and finished wide out.

At about the 200M, SUPER BUFFALO (I Saifudin) shifted inwards under pressure, causing TARZAN (App S Uzair) to be shifted inwards in response.

SILVER MAN which was beaten 26 1/4 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

RACE 11 (R267)       CLASS 5 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)

FULL MEANING (Lou Ho) jumped awkwardly outwards and threw its head up. Shortly after the start, FULL MEANING commenced to over-race.

SPEED CRAFT (S Anandan) was very slow to begin.

TAKEAIM (App P Haris) was slow to begin.

At about the 1200M, ONCE A THIEF (I Saifudin) commenced to over-race in response to FULL MEANING over-racing on his outside. These two horses brushed together at about the 1100M and thereafter ONCE A THIEF became unbalanced and raced ungenerously until the 900M.

At about the 100M, TAIL SPIN (J Mallyon) was eased to avoid the heels of NOVA SPIRIT (App AM Aizat) which rolled in.

GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

RACE 5 (R251) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 25 February 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of GAZOO which raced in a mid-to-back position before making some late progress. Evidence was taken from App AM Aizat, the rider of GAZOO, in the presence of his Master, Trainer F Maynard, and Trainer SB Tan, the Trainer of GAZOO.

App AM Aizat explained that he had intended to take a handy position, but the wide barrier made this difficult. He added that the saddle slipped badly on STAR INVINCIBLE (App N Varmah), which was racing directly in front of him from the 900M and he could see that the rider had very little control. He therefore decided not to attempt to pass STAR INVINCIBLE as he feared that it might shift abruptly or that the rider might become unseated.

App AM Aizat stated that when STAR INVINCIBLE was eventually pulled to the outside at about the 600M, he attempted to make progress but by that stage, the race had got away from him.

Having heard his evidence, the Stewards took no further action.

RACE 10 (R256) CLASS 5 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A), SATURDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2018

At the conclusion of an inquiry on 25 February 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, App S Saddam, the rider of RAINBOW STAR, in the presence of his Acting Master, Trainer PS Kumaran, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that at about the 1200M, he failed to allow sufficient space to the horses on his inside and failed to take all reasonable corrective measures to prevent his horse from drifting in.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App S Saddam’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of App S Saddam’s suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 5 March 2018 and to expire on 11 March 2018, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (1:05pm).

RACE 1 (R247) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2018

Jockey HS Gill (LIM’S RANGER) subsequently exercised his Right of Appeal and applied for a Stay of Sentence. The Stewards considered the application for a stay which was allowed. The appeal hearing against the penalty of the suspension of two (2) Malaysian race days will be held at a date to be fixed.

 RACE 5 (R251) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2018

Trainer C Leck was fined RM500/- under MRA Rule 35(1) for failing to ensure that the surcingle on STAR INVINCIBLE (App N Varmah) was in suitable condition. STAR INVINCIBLE was eased to the outside in an attempt to pull up at about the 800M after the saddle slipped.

Trainer C Leck was also fined RM500/- under MRA Regulation 1.13(d) as he failed to meet his obligation under MRA Regulation 1.13(d) in that having engaged an Apprentice to ride STAR INVINCIBLE, he was the person responsible for ensuring that the Apprentice’s equipment was not defective.

RACE 7 (R253) METRO A – 1400M (LONG COURSE A), SATURDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2018

Trainer F Maynard was fined RM250/- under MRA Rule 105(2) for requesting for a change of rider when one was already declared on ROYAL EXPLORER. He explained that Jockey J Mallyon had been declared in error. The change was authorized by the Stewards at 11:30am on Wednesday, 21 February 2018.

RACE 2 (R209) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A) – BEST OF LUCK STAKES, SATURDAY, 17 FEBRUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 24 February 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of GHOST AFFAIR in the above race. Evidence was taken from App P Haris, the rider of GHOST AFFAIR, in the presence of his Master, Trainer BT Lim.

After reviewing the vision of the race and considering the evidence tendered, App P Haris pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that:

  1. Between the 900M and the 600M, he made no attempt to make progress on the inside of LONESOME ME (App S Saddam) when he had the opportunity to do so, and therefore remained in a mid-to-back position when he had been instructed to ride the horse forward;
  2. At about the 600M, he restrained GHOST AFFAIR unnecessarily and forfeited up to two lengths which resulted in GHOST AFFAIR being placed further back in the field and further behind the leaders;
  3. Between the 400M and the 150M, having obtained a clear run on the outside, he failed to ride with his full vigour.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App P Haris’ guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) months with effect from Monday, 26 February 2018 and to expire on 25 April 2018, both dates inclusive. RUN IT TWICE (S Ruzaini) commenced to lay out from the 500M and raced wide out between the 500M and the 100M. When questioned, Jockey S Ruzaini stated that RUN IT TWICE had over-raced and got onto the wrong lead leg when he asked for his effort approaching the 500M. A post-race veterinary examination of RUN IT TWICE revealed no significant finding.

App S Uzair was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for dropping his whip.

The Stewards questioned Trainer WC Lim regarding the apparent improved performance of POLO MASTER today. Trainer WC Lim explained that POLO MASTER (App AK Lim) had shown a tendency to be lazy and unmotivated in his trackwork, and therefore he deliberately changed the horse’s training regime, including sending him to two Barrier Practices prior to this race. He further added that POLO MASTER had performed well in the second of those Barrier Practices under a very inexperienced rider.

RACE 10 (R217) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

CHINESE NEW YEAR STAKES

DEE MAJULAH (S Anandan) jumped outwards and bumped D’GREAT MAGIC (App KC Wong). As a consequence, DEE MAJULAH lost his position and was unable to take the lead as instructed.

When questioned, Jockey S Anandan stated that DEE MAJULAH was held in the barrier for a long time and just gave an ordinary jump. Thereafter he found himself on the heels of D’GREAT MAGIC which shifted inwards and crowded him. He was eventually able to obtain a handy position in fourth but was rather disappointed by DEE MAJULAH’s response in the straight. He added that DEE MAJULAH may have been unsuited by the rain-affected going. A post-race veterinary examination of DEE MAJULAH revealed no significant finding.

SPARKLER (App CK Khaw) was disappointed for a run between the 300M and the 200M, and was switched out to obtain clear running at about the 200M.

LIM’S RANGER (HS Gill) was switched outwards to obtain clear running at about the 200M but was unable to do so, and had to be slightly eased at about the 75M to avoid the heels of EAGLESHAM (Lou Ho).

RACE 1 (R086) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE C)

SPEEDY WARRIOR (App S Saddam) appeared to lose concentration in the barrier and was slow to begin.

MY TOUCH (App CK Khaw) was slow to begin.

App P Haris, the rider of MYSTIC WARRIOR, reported that the gelding threw his head up on jumping.

Jockey SU Lim, the rider of BUZZ MAN, reported that the gelding lost his footing on the final bend.

All riders returned to scale an average of 1/2kg overweight due to the adverse weather conditions.

RACE 2 (R087) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE C)

The State of Track was downgraded to “Yielding” after the running of this race.

JUBILATION (M Zairi) and HOLDING FAST (J De Souza) were both slow to begin.

WINNING TANGO (M Ganeesh) raced wide out until the 1000M whereupon he moved closer to the rest of the field while remaining wide and in last placing. When questioned, Jockey M Ganeesh reported that WINNING TANGO had raced with little enthusiasm today and was laying out throughout the race. He further stated reported that WINNING TANGO was unsuited by the going which was downgraded to “Yielding” after this race. The Stewards informed Jockey M Ganeesh that an inquiry into the running and handling of WINNING TANGO will held at a date to be fixed. A post-race veterinary examination of WINNING TANGO revealed no significant finding. The gelding which was distanced, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

BATTLE HORSE (S Salee) laid out under pressure between the 400M to the 200M.

MOZART ECLIPSE (Y Aify) laid inwards under pressure in the last 200M.

All riders returned to scale an average of 1/2kg overweight due to the adverse weather conditions.

Jockeys SU Lim and S Anandan, the riders of D’GREAT RICH and SAND BANK respectively, reported that their horses did not handle the going. Post-race veterinary examinations of D’GREAT RICH and SAND BANK revealed no significant finding.

RACE 3 (R088) MAIDEN – 1200M (SHORT COURSE C)

MYSTICAL STAR (F Yap) was slow to begin.

LINING TOGETHER (J De Souza) which was over-racing, shifted out in the early stages and bumped MYSTICAL STAR.

SHARP BLADE (S Ruzaini) over-raced from the start to the 800M and was briefly disappointed for a run at about the 500M.

In the concluding stages, POKEMON BABY (App AK Lim) laid inwards and BULL SPUR (App P Haris) laid outwards causing these horses to bump.

Jockey J De Souza, the rider of LINING TOGETHER, reported that his horse raced greenly. Jockey J De Souza was declared to carry 54kgs on LINING TOGETHER, weighed out at 54.2kgs and returned at 55.5kgs in a race where other riders generally returned 0.2kg or 03kg heavier due to the wet track conditions.

The Stewards enquired into this discrepancy. Jockey J De Souza, when questioned, reported that LINING TOGETHER had raced in rear throughout and therefore had received a significant amount of kick back, causing his clothing to be saturated.

As the record of returning weights for unplaced Jockeys in Race 3 was found to be incomplete, the Stewards could not be satisfied that no other riders in Race 3 had returned similarly overweight. They therefore noted Jockey J De Souza’s explanation and took no further action.

Jockey F Yap and App CK Khaw, the riders of MYSTICAL STAR and D’GREAT ELEGANCE respectively, reported that their horses did not handle the going.

RACE 4 (R089) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE C)

MAREA NEGRO (S Ruzaini) fly-jumped as the stalls opened and shifted inwards, bumping JET COSMO (App S Uzair). Both horses were slowly away as a result. Jockey S Ruzaini reported that he lost the use of his left side stirrup iron briefly as a result of this incident and soon recovered it.

At about the 500M, JANGO (J Mallyon) was forced to check to avoid the heels of BOOSTER (J De Souza).

ABSOLUTE MAVERICK (App P Haris) was observed to be over-racing in the early stages and laid out between the 500M and the 400M, therefore found it difficult to negotiate the bend. At this point, MAREA NEGRO was carried wide by ABSOLUTE MAVERICK. ABSOLUTE MAVERICK continued to lay out in the straight under pressure.

JET COSMO was awkward on the home bend between the 450M to the 400M.

A post-race veterinary examination of ABSOLUTE MAVERICK revealed that the gelding returned bled, and will be barred from racing for a period of six (6) months under MRA Rule 92(5) and thereafter will be required to pass a bleeder’s test before being declared to race again.

App AK Lim, the rider of BEIJING STAR, reported that his horse did not handle the going.

RACE 5 (R090) METRO A – 1200M (SHORT COURSE C)

WILAYAH SILVER BOWL

FLASH GIFT (M Zairi) jumped outwards and LUCKY DAPPER (S Sandana) jumped inwards causing SHOWBOY (Z Khairil) to be tightened between them.

METIER STAR (J De Souza) was slow to find its stride.

BLACK AND WHITE (App S Saddam) was slow to begin and had to be urged to obtain a midfield position and was forced to race wide as a consequence.

At about the 500M, CAPTAIN JAZZ (S Ruzaini) shifted out, taking BIG ROLE (Y Aify) out as a consequence. SHOWBOY and METIER STAR were also observed to be unbalanced at this stage of the race.

Jockey J De Souza, the rider of METIER STAR, reported that his horse did not handle the going.

After this race, a deputation of senior riders asked for permission to speak to the Stipendiary Stewards to express their concerns regarding the safety of the track and in particular the area between the 600M and the 400M.

The Jockeys present were Jockey Z Khairil, the rider of SHOWBOY, Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of CAPTAIN JAZZ, and Jockey Y Aify, the rider of BIG ROLE. Acting on their recommendations, in order to promote a maximum level of safety for horses and riders, the Racing Stewards used their powers under MRA Rule 12(2)(s) to transfer the remaining races set to be run on the Short Course to the Long Course, therefore avoiding the area in question.

RACE 6 (R091) RESTRICTED MAIDEN – 1200M (LONG COURSE C)

The Veterinary Surgeon reported that the record of markings in the passport of JEFFREY (Lou Ho) was found to be incomplete. However, having received a further report from the Veterinary Surgeon that the gelding was able to be positively identified, JEFFREY was allowed to run in the race. The Stewards informed Trainer LN Danis that an inquiry into this matter will be held at a date to be fixed.

This race was rescheduled to start at 3:40pm and was run on the Long Course instead of the Short Course as advertised, due to concerns regarding the track safety between the 600M and the 400M on the short course.

NICKEL ECLIPSE (J Mallyon) and GARRYURRA PRINCESS (A Nawawi) were both slow to begin. NICKEL ECLIPSE raced greenly throughout.

GHOST SPIRIT (App P Haris) was fractious in the barrier and raced very greenly throughout.

PENDRAGON PRINCESS (App WK Lee) jumped inwards causing GARRYURRA PRINCESS to be taken inwards and lose ground.

At about the 900M, ELEGANT DANCER (SS Vanan) was green and laid out causing JEFFREY to be forced wide. In the concluding stages, ELEGANT DANCER again laid out under pressure causing PENDRAGON PRINCESS to lay out in response.

Jockey SU Lim, the rider of SPECIAL LUCK, reported that his horse was making respiratory noises. A post-race veterinary examination of SPECIAL LUCK revealed that the colt returned broken-winded (grade 3) and as such will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.

This race was rescheduled to start at 4pm and was run on the Long Course instead of the Short Course as advertised, due to concerns regarding the track safety between the 600M and the 400M on the short course.

SILVER VICTOR (HS Gill) was fractious behind the barriers and was difficult to be loaded. Trainer BT Lim was warned that SILVER VICTOR must improve its barrier manners, failing which action may be taken against the gelding.

TAFFETAS (J De Souza) was slow to find its stride.

Approaching the 1000M, SILVER VICTOR laid out causing THE MILLIONAIRE (S Anandan) to be taken out and to be shuffled back to the field.

At about the 1000M, CELERITAS (S Sandana) was briefly tightened for room between BADCOE (S Ruzaini) and SILVER VICTOR and lost its position as a consequence.

FAT POWER (S Salee) and HAWAIIAN KING (App S Uzair) both raced wide throughout.

At about the 400M, TAFFETAS was disappointed for a run and was forced to switch inwards to obtain clear running.

Jockey S Sandana, the rider of CELERITAS, reported that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of CELERITAS revealed no significant finding.

GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

RACE 5 (R080) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE C), SATURDAY, 20 JANUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB JANUARY MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 21 January 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of PLATOON which raced wide throughout and compounded badly in the straight. Evidence was taken from Trainer R Lines and Jockey F Yap, the Trainer and rider of PLATOON respectively.

Trainer R Lines stated that he had instructed Jockey F Yap to race in a midfield position but had told him to use his own initiative based on the circumstances of the race.

Jockey F Yap informed the Stewards that at about the 1000M, he attempted to place PLATOON just behind the leaders but the gelding began to over-race at this stage in response to TILSWORTH MALI (J De Souza) over-racing on his inside, he therefore found himself in a disadvantageous wide position around the bend and forfeited ground which caused PLATOON to finish his race weakly.

Trainer R Lines further added that PLATOON may have been rather fresh due to an interrupted preparation for this race. The Stewards noted their explanations.

RACE 1 (R1547) CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 16 DECEMBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB DECEMBER MEETING 2017

The Stewards, on 20 January 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, called Jockey HK Cheng and showed him the film of his ride D’GREAT ELEGANCE on 16 December 2017. They noted that D’GREAT ELEGANCE had repeatedly shifted in from approaching the 250M (as noted in the Stewards’ Report of 16 December 2017) in response to the whip, and questioned Jockey HK Cheng as to why, in such circumstances, he had not attempted to switch the whip to his left hand. Jockey HK Cheng responded that he felt himself to be less effective at using his whip in the left hand.

The Stewards informed him that they considered this aspect of his riding to fall below the expected standard and warned him to improve in this regard in future.

Before the race, Trainer S Hamilton informed the Stewards that in view of HOW HUGE’s wide draw, she had instructed her rider, App S Rosmizan, to position the gelding well-back in the field today.

WILL BE BETTER (App AK Lim) jumped left causing ROCK AND STONE (S Sandana) to be taken left and brush HOW HUGE (App S Rosmizan).

At about the 1100M, JET ACE (I Saifudin) was over-racing and threw its head up.

MILITARY STAR (Y Narredu) which was beaten 24 1/4 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

The Stewards questioned Trainer C Leck, the Trainer of HERECOMESMYMONEY (S Ruzaini), regarding the mare’s improved performance today as compared to her last start where she finished 8th over the same course of distance.

Trainer C Leck stated that HERECOMESMYMONEY had improved during the 6-week break between her last start and today’s race, and that she had been assisted by the application of Blinkers today. He further added that the mare had performed well in a Barrier Trial 2 weeks previously.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey S Sandana, the rider of ROCK AND STONE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that approaching the 800M, he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MILITARY STAR (Y Narredu) resulting in that horse having to be checked to avoid ROCK AND STONE’s heels.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey S Sandana’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of his suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 29 January 2018 and to expire on 10 February 2018, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (2pm).

MUSANG KING (M Ganeesh) raced greenly in the early stages, raced wide from the 1000M and finished 25 1/2 lengths behind the winner. The gelding will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

Approaching the 600M, NOVA DASHING had to be checked off the heels of D’GREAT ARES (SU Lim) which slowed abruptly and, in doing so, NOVA DASHING shifted in causing ZION SPLENDOUR (S Ruzaini) to be checked in its stride and to lose ground. TEDDY BEAR (H Bukhari) and CHIPS (S Ruzaini) were both slow to begin.

CHIPS (S Ruzaini) blundered at about the 500M. Jockey S Ruzaini reported that the gelding had lost his footing.

PLATOON (F Yap) raced wide throughout in order to obtain a forward position and remained wide until the 400M. The Stewards questioned Trainer R Lines as to why the horse had been ridden forward when he had indicated in the Trainer’s Instruction Form that Jockey F Yap was to take a midfield position. Having heard his explanation, the Stewards adjourned the inquiry into the running and handling of PLATOON at a date to be fixed.

At about the 200M, PERFECT RUN (App CK Khaw) laid out causing LINCOLN’S EXCUSE (Z Khairil) to be awkwardly placed on the heels of PLATOON which was weakening and losing ground. In response, LINCOLN’S EXCUSE was switched sharply out and finished wide out.

On jumping, EL CONDOR (Lou Ho) raced fiercely and attempted to lay in causing him to brush on several occasions with SATURDAY’S DELIGHT (App WK Lee) at about the 1150M. Subsequently EL CONDOR continued to lay in, carrying SEGAR THE BEST (R Shafiq) to the inside which caused GAZOO (Y Narredu) to be briefly tightened for room against the rail.

At about the 900M, GAZOO eased to avoid the heels of SEGAR THE BEST causing CONDADO directly behind him, to take a check in response.

Shortly after the 600M, TRIPLE ONE STAR (J De Souza) became unbalanced and rolled LIM’S ACTION (HS Gill) wide in response.

At about the 500M, SATURDAY’S DELIGHT rolled in briefly causing PORSENCE (F Yap) to take a check. SEGAR THE BEST which was directly behind PORSENCE on the rail, was forced to check in response, as was GAZOO which was directly behind SEGAR THE BEST. As a result of this incident, CONDADO was awkwardly placed on the heels of GAZOO and PLATINUM TYCOON (SU Lim) and was forced to check sharply and became unbalanced.

Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of BLOOD ROYAL, reported that his horse did not handle the yielding going.

Jockey Y Narredu, the rider of REYSHA, reported that he was instructed to ride REYSHA from midfield but due to horses on his outside jumping more alertly, he was unable to obtain a midfield position.

The Stewards questioned Trainer L Moy, the Trainer of the winner, MR WOLFF (I Saifudin) into the gelding’s improved performance today. Trainer L Moy reported that when he noticed that the track seemed to be biased towards the front runners today, he instructed his jockey to make the running and to stay close to the inside rail in the straight. RACE 7 (R1562) CLASS 4 – 1400M (LONG COURSE A), SUNDAY, 17 DECEMBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB DECEMBER MEETING 2017

The Stewards, on 2nd January 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, enquired into the running and handling of PURPLE RAIN LADY (S Sandana) which raced well back in the field before making significant progress in the last 300M to finish sixth. They interviewed Jockey S Sandana and Trainer KF Wong, the rider and trainer of PURPLE RAIN LADY respectively.

Trainer KF Wong stated that he expected PURPLE RAIN LADY to be well suited by the 1400M distance of the race. However, this was the first time she had raced on a “Good” surface and all her previous form had been on “Yielding” or “Soft” going. She was also racing in a higher grade than her previous start, which she won. He explained that the step up in class and the firmer track had exposed the filly’s lack of pace.

Jockey S Sandana stated that PURPLE RAIN LADY had never been able to match the speed of the rest of the field until her rivals started to slow in the last 300M. He felt that although the filly had appeared to finish the race off strongly, it was in fact the case that she had maintained her own pace and passed tiring horses. When questioned on his intermittent use of the whip, he argued that PURPLE RAIN LADY responded well to hands and heels riding. However, he admitted that the filly had surprised him with her late rally on this occasion, the first time he had ridden her in a race.

Having heard their evidence, the Stewards warned Jockey S Sandana that in future he should ride all his mounts in a manner that leaves no room for query. With regard to Trainer KF Wong’s opinion on the unsuitability of the “Good” track for PURPLE RAIN LADY, the Stewards reminded him of his obligations under MRA Rule 35(7) to report any matter which may have affected the performance of his horses in a race.
