RACE 2 (R002)         CLASS 5 (A) – 1600M (LONG COURSE)

HAVE A GRAND NEW YEAR STAKES

GOLDEN CRAFTSMAN (J De Souza) was slow into stride.

ZILFIKAR (Y Aify) and NEW SENSATION (App S Uzair) led by a large margin in the middle stages. Inquiries into the riding of Jockey Y Aify and App S Uzair were opened.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey Y Aify, the rider of ZILFIKAR, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were the manner he had ridden ZILFIKAR in the early stages by not restraining and continued to attempt to lead when on the outside of NEW SENSATION.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Jockey Y Aify’s mitigating factors, previous penalties applied under similar circumstances and his record. Jockey Y Aify was suspended from riding in races for a period of one (1) month, to be deferred, with effect from 4 January 2021 and to expire on 3 February 2021, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

When questioned, App S Uzair (NEW SENSATION), in the presence of his Employing Trainer, L Moy, stated that he had ridden NEW SENSATION in a similar fashion at his prior winning start and given that he had drawn inside of ZILFIKAR, he had attempted to ride the gelding in the same manner. Whilst accepting this in part, the Stewards reprimanded App S Uzair for continuing in a prolonged manner his attempt to lead, thereby overtaxing NEW SENSATION.

VERGLATICA (App A Suriya) took a missed step near the 800M and was eased down in the straight. It was ascertained that VERGLATICA had a bilateral sesamoid fracture and avulsion of the suspensory ligament. The gelding was subsequently humanely euthanized.

The Stewards inquired into App S Uzair’s ride over the final 5 strides. At the conclusion of the inquiry, App S Uzair (NEW SENSATION), in the presence of his Employing Trainer, L Moy, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(6) for failing to ride out to the end of the race.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the fact that NEW SENSATION was tiring badly, however, believed that the offence required a period of suspension. App S Uzair was suspended from riding in races for a period of 5 (five) Malaysian race days with effect from 2 January 2021 and to expire on 17 January 2021, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

The Stewards, on 6 December 2020 (Sunday), concluded the inquiry into Apprentice A Zaimuddin’s riding of ELEGANT. He explained that he had ridden ELEGENT in the same fashion as he had developed with a limited usage of the whip. He further stated that he had reacted quickly and pulled sharply on the gelding to stop it shifting in as App CK Khaw (D’GREAT LUCK) who was racing on his inside near the 100M had shouted. The Stewards accepted App A Zaimuddin’s explanation.

The inquiry into App N Varmah’s riding of TARGET in the initial stages was concluded on 5 December 2020 (Saturday). The delay in reconvening was caused by Trainer C Leck having to adhere to Covid 19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and that App N Varmah was on medical leave outside of Selangor.

App N Varmah explained that his instructions and intention had been to ride in a handy position but TARGET was a poor mannered horse in the barrier and had not begun quickly. GLOBAL AMY (S Muniandy) jumped awkwardly.

LIMIT UP (App CK Khaw) raced greenly in the early stages.

CHAMPION KING raced fiercely in the early stages.

Near the 1100M, NASSEB checked when tightened by LIMIT UP which had been tightened by METEOR LOUI (SU Lim). At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey SU Lim, the rider of METEOR LOUI, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that for shifting in at this stage.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey SU Lim’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 14 December 2020 and to expire on 26 December 2020, both dates inclusive. . Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of his suspension. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

Jockey J Shankar eased NASSEB from the race and advised later that he feared that the gelding had sustained an injury when interfered with. A subsequent veterinary examination of NASSEB revealed no significant finding. Trainer AB Abdullah was advised that NASSEB will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.

Trainer M Sukri advised that GLOBAL ARMY had a habit of being slow into stride and was also inclined to be wayward in running.

In considering this, the Stewards deemed that GLOBAL ARMY must pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again. A post-race veterinary examination of GLOBAL ARMY revealed no significant finding.

                                    WA TAB WELCOMES SELANGOR RACES

An objection was lodged by Jockey R Rueven, the rider of BEIJING STAR, placed second, against SUPER BB (AK Lim) being declared the winner, on the grounds of alleged interference at about the 125M. After considering the evidence, the Racing Stewards overruled the objection and the result stood.

RAINBOW FISH (App CK Khaw) raced wide in the middle stages.

SUPER BB drifted out when Jockey AK Lim continued to use his whip over the 200M, carrying BEIJING STAR outwards over the final strides. On inquiry, Jockey AK Lim pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that he continued to ride SUPER BB aggressively with the whip and failed to straighten that gelding when it shifted over the concluding 150M.

In assessing a penalty, the Stewards considered this incident at the lower level of carelessness as it did not include any significant interference to any other runner, and imposed a suspension of one (1) day with effect from 19 October 2020 and to expire on 24 October 2020, both dates inclusive. RACE 6 (R786) OPEN MAIDEN (WFA) – 1100M (SHORT COURSE), SATURDAY, 3 OCTOBER 2020, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2020

The Stewards, on 6 October 2020 at the Selangor Turf Club, inquired into Jockey J Daniel’s riding of UPTOWN GIRL in the above race. Evidence was taken from Jockey J Daniel and Trainer MW Teh, the rider and trainer of UPTOWN GIRL respectively.

Jockey J Daniel stated that he had been instructed to ride the mare in a mid-to-back position and as it was having its first race start to attempt to find an uninterrupted passage. He had to ease behind PROVE IT (J Low) near the 800M, and when UPTOWN GIRL had commenced to make ground in the straight, he had been impeded when PEARL DANCER (App N Varmah) shifted outwards in front of him and he had elected to take UPTOWN GIRL to the outside of CAUSE TO FLY (R Rueven). He was of the opinion that UPTOWN GIRL resented to the use of the whip as it was inclined to swish its tail.

Trainer MW Teh confirmed the instructions and was of the opinion that UPTOWN GIRL’s lack in exposure after having trialled unimpressively. Further, he stated that on returning to stables, UPTOWN GIRL was ascertained to have a mild bow to its fore tendon which had been confirmed by the Veterinary Surgeon.

In accepting this evidence, the Stewards advised Trainer MW Teh that he was obliged to report any matter which may have affected the performance of his horses under the provisions of MRA Rule 35(7), also that UPTOWN GIRL will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.

RACE 6 (R796) SUPREME A (SW) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE), SKY RACING STAKES, SUNDAY, 4 OCTOBER 2020, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2020

App S Uzair (SPLENDOR) was reprimanded for using his whip forward of the shoulder under the provisions of MRA Rule 41(6)(c)(i).

The report dated 24 September 2020 (V20/064) from the Chief Analyst of Veterinary Forensic Laboratory stated that 30 bottles of coded urine samples and 30 sets of coded blood samples from the above mentioned race meeting were received on 19 September 2020, for analysis under the MRA Rules and Regulations. No prohibited substances were detected.

19 SEPTEMBER 2020

SELANGOR TURF CLUB SEPTEMBER MEETING 2020

The report dated 24 September 2020 (V20/065) from the Chief Analyst of Veterinary Forensic Laboratory stated that 2 bottles of coded urine samples from the above mentioned race meeting were received on 19 September 2020, for analysis under the MRA Rules and Regulations. No prohibited substances were detected.

RACE 5 (R785) CLASS 3 – 1300M (LONG COURSE), TAB STAKES, SATURDAY, 3 OCTOBER 2020, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2020

The Stewards, on 9 October 2020 at the Selangor Turf Club, inquired into Jockey SU Lim’s riding of LIM’S PERSHING.  Evidence was taken from Jockey SU Lim and Trainer S Dunderdale, the rider and trainer of LIM’S PERSHING respectively.

After considering the evidence, Jockey SU Lim was charged under MRA Rule 44 (10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that:

  1. He failed to ride LIM’S PERSHING with any vigour after straightening (long course) until the 375M.

  2. At approximately the 275M, he stopped riding and stood up on the gelding for approximately six (6) or seven (7) strides.

Jockey SU Lim pleaded not guilty to the charge and asked that the matter be adjourned to allow for him to call further veterinary evidence. The inquiry was adjourned to a later date.

RACE 9 (R789) CLASS 5 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE), SATURDAY, 3 OCTOBER 2020, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2020

The Stewards, on 9 October 2020 at the Selangor Turf Club, inquired into Jockey J Low’s riding of WASHINGTON and the manner in which he had ridden the gelding out in the straight.  Evidence was taken from Jockey J Low and Trainer S Dunderdale, the rider and trainer of WASHINGTON respectively.

Trainer S Dunderdale advised the Stewards that WASHINGTON always travelled very strongly, however when pushed, tended not to respond and improved only in a moderate fashion. He had thus instructed Jockey J Low to ride WASHINGTON in a forward position and to ensure that he saved the gelding for a late run.

Jockey J Low agreed with the instructions and advised that WASHINGTON travelled very strongly after straightening and he had ridden quietly, holding the gelding together in hope of achieving the desired result. He had then ridden out to the post to his ability but WASHINGTON had raced only moderately compared to how it was travelling on straightening.

In accepting this evidence, the Stewards advised Trainer S Dunderdale that he should inform the Stewards of any aspect of his horses racing which may have an effect on their performances, and opportunity given that he also trained the horse which led in the race, D’ GREAT STRIKE (App L De Souza).

Jockey J Low was reminded of his obligations to ride in a positive and competitive manner at all times.

RACE 8 (R788) CLASS 4 (B) – 1100M (SHORT COURSE), TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY STAKES, SATURDAY, 3 OCTOBER 2020, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2020

The Stewards, on 9 October 2020 at the Selangor Turf Club, inquired into the reason for ICHIKA BACHIKA losing considerable ground at the start.  Evidence was taken from Jockey J Low and Trainer S Dunderdale, the rider and trainer of ICHIKA BACHIKA respectively.

After considering the evidence, Jockey J Low was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards in that ICHIKA BACHIKA was not given a chance to jump properly from the start. The Stewards were not persuaded that SOUTHERN DRAGON (S Ruzaini) from Stall 2 had crossed ICHIKA BACHIKA so as to impede the gelding in any way.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration that Jockey J Low had previously been suspended twice under MRA Rule 44(10) but considered this incident at the lower range of culpability. Jockey J Low was suspended from riding in races for a period of six (6) weeks with effect from 12 October 2020 and to expire on 22 November 2020, both dates inclusive.

FRIDAY, 9 OCTOBER 2020, SLTC

Syce Md Kajol (S.522), an employee of Trainer S Dunderdale, was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for failing to wear a face mask whilst performing his duties associated with his stables.

RACE 5 (R785) CLASS 3 – 1300M (LONG COURSE), TAB STAKES, SATURDAY, 3 OCTOBER 2020, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2020

The Stewards, on 16 October 2020 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into Jockey SU Lim’s ride on LIM’S PERSHING, and further evidence was taken from Jockey SU Lim. Evidence was also taken from four (4) members of the SLTC Veterinary Department and further evidence was taken from LIM’S PERSHING’s Trainer, S Dunderdale.

After considering all the evidence, Jockey SU Lim was found guilty under MRA Rule 44 (10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge being:

  1. He failed to ride LIM’S PERSHING with any vigour after straightening (long course) until the 375M.

  2. At approximately the 275M, he stopped riding and stood up on the gelding for approximately six (6) or seven (7) strides.

Jockey SU Lim was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) months with effect from 19 October 2020 and to expire on 18 December 2020, both dates inclusive.

Jockey SU Lim subsequently exercised his Right of Appeal and applied for a Stay of Sentence. The Stewards considered the application for a stay which was allowed. The Appeal will be held at a date to be fixed.
