Consequently, she elected to allow this gelding to lead rather than to restrain for cover as, this in her opinion, would be the least prejudicial to PACIFIC ATLANTIC. The Panel noted her explanation. (I Saifudin)

Jockey reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts with sufficient vigour so as to leave no room for query by the Stewards.

Jockey XC Liang appeared before the Panel of Stewards and was questioned regarding his riding on HANDSOME JOYFUL in the early and middle stages. In this regard, his attention was specifically drawn to his decision to take a hold on his mount on 2 occasions between the 1000M and the 900M which resulted in HANDSOME JOYFUL throwing its head up and thereafter, his decision to race in a one-off running line and 3 running line despite having the opportunity to cross the inside. Jockey XC Liang explained that his instructions were to ride a forward race which was his intention after jumping , however when he initially attempted to cross the 2 runners on his inside, he had noticed that he was insufficiently clear and he subsequently took a hold in order to avoid causing interference, this was the reason for the horse’s initial reaction. Thereafter he explained that his horse had showed a tendency to lay out and as he attempted to correct, his horse again reacted to his correction and threw its head up. He further explained that in the middle stages, despite his attempt to angle his mount in, HANDSOME JOYFUL was reluctant to obtain that running line and he therefore elected to allow it to stride in a position where it was comfortable as he felt that HANDSOME JOYFUL was in a good rhythm.

The Panel noted the explanation of the Jockey and reminded him of his obligations to report all circumstances that may have affected his horses in races and to not cover unnecessary ground in races.

Jockey S Salee (SHENG WARRIOR) was fined RM250/- under MRA Rule 107(10) in that he was unable to make the carded weight. The Stewards granted permission for Jockey KC Low to replace Jockey S Salee as the rider of SHENG WARRIOR.

App Clyde Leck appeared before the Panel and was questioned regarding his tactics on PACIFIC SOLDIER. In this regard, he explained that after his mount jumped well and showed good early speed, he elected to use this advantage and use obtain a forward position. He stated that it was not his intention to lead, however, this was a product of his quick beginning. He further explained that moving through the 1200M when he attempted to slow the speed, JING JIN (L De Souza) had raced alongside him which had resulted in PACIFIC SOLDIER taking a hold of the bit and him being able to restrain. This, in his opinion, had contributed to the fast early pace to his mount. The Panel noted the explanation of App Clyde Leck.

Notwithstanding, his attempt to conserve DUMA’s energy to ensure a strong finish when he asked DUMA for its final effort moving to the 300M, the gelding did not have the necessary finishing kick and tired significantly just short of the line which resulted in this gelding being beaten. The Panel noted the explanation of Jockey AL Da Silva, however, warned him against the practice of looking around in races.

A race review was called into this incident, which was followed by an objection being lodged by Jockey WW Cheah, the rider of the fourth placed horse (OUR SECRET WEAPON) against the winner, FROM THE NAVY (App Clyde Leck) on the grounds of interference in the concluding stages.

After considering the evidence in this matter, the Board overruled the objection as it could not be satisfied that but for the above incident, OUR SECRET WEAPON would not have finished ahead of FROM THE NAVY.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, App Clyde Leck, the rider of FROM THE NAVY, in the presence of his Employing Trainer, C Leck, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to OUR SECRET WEAPON in the concluding stages.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App Clyde Leck’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of one Malaysian race day with effect from 13 January 2025 and to expire on 18 January 2025, both dates inclusive. He was also fined RM1,000/- and advised of his Right of Appeal.

App Clyde Leck was also advised that a more severe sanction may follow should he appear before the Panel regarding a matter of similar severity.
