After drawing a blank yesterday, Mark Ewe booted home two winners at Sungei Besi here today to mark his successful relocation to Malaysia.

The Malaysian, once a leading apprentice in Singapore, has seen a drastic drop in fortunes in recent years. He had just one win to show last year and after one win in 80 rides at Kranji this season, decided to head “home” to revive his career.

His first winner SHINE SHINE came from a long way back to win a Class 4 – 1400m. 

“He wasn’t expected to win,” said Ewe. “I was instructed to settle him in midfield and try to improve my position at the home turn.” SHINE SHINE paid RM59, beating the favourite FLAMING PHOENIX by a head.

Ewe’s second winner SAN ANDREAS managed to overcome rough passages in running to win the other Class 4 – 1400m handicap. 

SAN ANDREAS jumped best and led early but Ewe eased him back to settle fourth as instructed. In the home straight, he had to wait patiently for an opening behind several horses which fortunately came in time for him to make his charge shortly after the 200m.

SAN ANDREAS (RM21) beat the favourite GENERAL QIN by 3/4 length. 

“I wish to thank all the owners and trainers for their support since I moved here,” said Ewe.

Meanwhile, visiting Singapore-based jockeys Wong Chin Chuen and Simon Kok Wei Hoong were both successful although they failed to win the two feature races.

Wong finished second in the Selangor Gold Cup and third in the Japan Racing Association Trophy but had back-to-back wins on SUPER HAPPY and LION KING. Both horses started favourite in their respective races.

Wong was a leading apprentice in Malaysia before moving down south.

Kok had to wait until the final race to taste success. His mount MIGHT IS RIGHT had to wear down the front-running favourite BACK TO THE FUTURE after a duel in the final 200m before winning by a neck.
