Mega weekend for former Macau gallopers

KUALA LUMPUR:  Sep 19, 2024

All eyes will be on MEGA GEMS and DAYLIGHT at Sungai Besi this weekend when the two high-credentialed former Macau gallopers make their Malaysian debut.

Mega Gems

MEGA GEMS (Zoustar – Flying Hula) was placed once in two runs at two in New Zealand, then won his only starts in Australia before being purchased for racing in Macau.

The Australian gelding was placed twice in seven starts in the 2021/22 season at Taipa racecourse but blossomed the following season to win three races before running second in the Macau Derby Trial before winning the big one, the Macau Derby over 1800m.

However, MEGA GEMS, then known as Master Hunter, failed to reproduce that sort of form in the 2023/2024 season with just two placings in 10 runs before heading to Malaysia. He earned a total of HK$2,254,825 in prizemoney in Macau.

MEGA GEMS, now six years old, has been given a MRA rating of 80 and will meet the likes of AWESOME STORM, GAMESTONKS and TRIGGER PEGASUS in the Metro A set-weight event over 1200m on Saturday.

DAYLIGHT (Pierro – Volted In) will make his Malaysian debut in the Class 3 – 1200m handicap on Sunday.

The seven-year-old Australian gelding is one of several ex Macau horses who have made their way to Malaysia to continue their racing.

DAYLIGHT raced in Australia as Yuanno, managing a (Maiden) win in seven starts before heading to Macau.

He won three races in his first season in Macau including the Macau Derby Trial over 1500m, then finished second in the Macau Guineas and third in the Macau Derby over 1800m.

DAYLIGHT couldn’t quite match up to that sort of form in the following two seasons, managing just one win over 1500m in his final race in Macau. He earned HK$1,773,750.

Both MEGA GEMS and DAYLIGHT landed last June for trainer Wayne Lim.

Other former Macau gallopers who have already arrived in the country and registered for racing to date are BROTHERLY LOVE, CRAZY LOVE, SWEET LOVE, LADY POH, WHITE DRAGON, YAYEE, ARIGATO, FIRST LOVE, TRUE LOVE and ELECTRONIC BOOM.
