KUALA LUMPUR: March 20, 2025

Jerlyn Seow made history last year when she became the first female to win the apprentice title in the final season of racing in Singapore.

PACIFIC BEAUTY

Now plying her trade in Malaysia, Seow could rewrite history again by winning the title here this year. And she is heading in the right direction.

A double on Pacific Beauty and Pacific Victory at Sungai Besi last Sunday propelled her to the top of the apprentice table.

Seow now leads the table with eight wimners, the same as Syafifie Zailuddin, but she is ahead with more second-place finishes.

Whereas Syafifie achieved six of his wins in Ipoh, Seow has ridden solely at Sungai Besi until now. But that is about to change.

PACIFIC VICTORY

“I have been granted a licence by the Perak Turf Club last month so I will be riding there sometime soon,” she said.

That means more trouble for the rest.

There is also a changing of the guard in the senior ranks as well after last weekend’s races.

A win in Ipoh on River Dragon on Saturday, followed by a superb treble – including victory astride Noah Khan in the Equine Sanctuary Tunku Gold Cup – the following day catapulted Andre Luis Da Silva to the top of the table with 14 wins.

NOAH KHAN

The Brazilian is three winners ahead of the Laercio De Souza and Wong Kam Chong, the 2020 champion jockey.

Should Da Silva bag the title this year, he will be following the footsteps of compatriot Jose De Souza who won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015.

Meanwhile at Sungai Besi last Sunday, the champions of the 2024 season were presented with their trophies.

Pacific Stable won 27 races and more than RM560,000 in prizemoney to top the owner’s table. With their huge string in training, the stable will be hard to topple again this year.

Simon Dunderdale won the trainer’s title for the first time with 73 winners, 26 more than second-placed Winson Cheng Han Yong. The Kiwi is again involved in the tussle for the 2025 title currently, He is joint top with Richard Lines, Jason Ong and Nick Selvan with 12 winners apiece but fourtn in the table on countback.

Ruzaini Supien was a runaway winner of the jockey’s title with 61 winners, 20 ahead of Lim Aun Kean. Both are currently under suspension.

Aiman Nazir and Azizi Azhari were tied at the top of the apprentice title with 30 winners apiece, with the former winning the title with more second placings (31 to 18).
