Father and son steal show on Cup day
KUALA LUMPUR: Apr 17, 2022
Apprentice Clyde Leck, who had to sit out the RM200,000 Nine Dragon Boat Tunku Gold Cup, was the toast of the riders at Sungei Besi here today when he booted home five winners.
Indentured to his father Charles Leck, who trains all his five winners, the young rider has moved up to fourth in the table with 14 winners after his phenomenal day.
Clyde is in his second season, after making his debut with seven winners last year.
His five-timer earns him a racing saddle sponsored by the Richard Lines Stable to any apprentice who rides four winners in a weekend.
The father-and-son combination started the day by taking the first race with PRESTO, and double up with newcomer GAMESTONKS five races later.
They wound up the day reeling the last three races with LEADING CELLIST, MAIDANZ BEAUTY and SMART WARRIOR.
“I’m feeling euphoric to be able to win five winners in a day. I have to thank my master, my dad, who has given me countless opportunity to be able to make this achievement,” said Clyde.
“I would also like to thank all fellow jockeys who have taught and guided me since the start and of course I would like to thank the SLTC Apprentice School, especially master LL TAI for training and helping me improve since the very start. I am very grateful for this opportunity and I hope I can continue doing well throughout my career.“
A very proud dad said: “What a day to remember. Winning five races a day is not an easy task, moreover with my son Clyde riding all my five winners is indeed a achievement in my training career as a race horse trainer the last 30 years.”
“Clyde is riding with full of confidence and he will only progress to become better from here. I would like to thank the Selangor Turf Club chief steward Fin Powrie for forming the apprentice school which benefited Clyde as a jockey.
“As a father and son combination, it adds colour to the racing scene in MRA. We promise the race goers there will be more excitement between the LECK combination in the coming weeks.”
