A Day of Fashion, Style, Charity and Horse Racing
More than 300 gorgeous ladies had a wonderful time at the Selangor Turf Club on Sunday, May 28th, 2023 where beauty, fashion, style and horse racing met at the Platinum Horse Entrepreneur Club Ladies’ Day event, jointly organized by Selangor Turf Club and UPBH Holdings Pte. Ltd.
The Ladies’ Day was a day for feminine elegance. Whilst the undisputed heroes of the afternoon were the equine stars on the racetrack and their riders, including international jockeys, competing for the Group 1, Equine Sanctuary Tunku Gold Cup, the Sungei Besi racecourse became a virtual catwalk for ladies “dressed to the nines” in their most stylish outfits with matching hats, sharing the limelight.
The “Ladies’ Day” event is a horse racing tradition, which started in Britain many years ago and sees Royalty and the crème de la crème of European racegoers participate in “Fashions on the Field” in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot. Whilst nearer to home, the Crown Oaks Day in Melbourne has the enticing mix of high fashion and elite horse racing, creating an unparalleled level of excitement. The “Ladies’ Day” event has become a global racing tradition from Auckland to Dubai – Louisville to Paris.
Attractive prizes were awarded in the Best Hat Competition. The judges had a tough task in selecting the winners as the ladies had put in tremendous effort to dressing up for the event.
Amongst the invited guests at the event were: Her Excellency Dr Petra Ponevacs-Pana, Ambassador of Hungary; Mrs Song Xiaomei, spouse of Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China; Madam Ma Cuihong, Minister-Counsellor of Embassy of the People’s Republic of China; Ms. Yao Yinghua, First Secretary (Political Section) of Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and Datin Seri Ester Tiong.
To coincide with the Ladies’ Day, the Club hosted the running of a special fillies & mares race, the Platinum Horse Entrepreneur Club Trophy. The ladies had a wonderful time supporting and cheering home their favorite horse. Much attention was paid to the aptly named “Uptown Girl” & “Roses for Me”, however the race was won by “Limitless Stout”, owned by Nobel Racing Stable and ridden by apprentice R Nuqman for expatriate New Zealand trainer, Simon Dunderdale.
The Equine Sanctuary Tunku Gold Cup, offering RM150,000 prize money was the main drawcard of the day. The Tunku Gold Cup, which is named after our first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Teramat Mulia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, is one of the most coveted classic races in Malaysian horse racing and was first run in 1968.
In the Equine Sanctuary Tunku Gold Cup, “San Andreas”, named after the 2015 box office success, jumped from near the outside of the 16 runner field, upset more fancied contenders to clinch the Cup by half a length. Ridden by Brazilian jockey, Vitor Ferreira and trained by A B Abdullah, “San Andreas” is owned by Box Office Stable. The trophies for the Group 1 race were presented by Mr Eric Koh, Managing Director of sponsors, Equine Sanctuary Private Limited, a Singapore based company specializing in premier horse care services and distributor of quality imported feedstuff and products.
With its success – the Selangor Turf Club’s Ladies’ Day, is now a permanent feature on the Malaysian social calendar.
On the same day, the Club held the running of the Horse City Stakes. The race was witnessed by Director of Horse City Sdn Bhd, Mr Tan Tiang Huat who sponsored RM5,000 worth of Horse City Voucher to the winning trainer of the Horse City Stakes. Mr Don Clarke from Horse City presented the voucher to the Trainer of the winning horse, BERRY BLISS, Mr Charles Leck. Horse City Sdn Bhd has been the sole agent of Australia premium horse feed, Hygain, for the past 20 years.
