Goodbye Jockey M Zairi
Horse racing like a battle can get hold of you. It’s not just the thrill of the actual race, but the smell of the stables, the beauty of morning trackwork, the laughs and jokes with friends.
For some, sure, the colour of money is important. However, there are others for whom the battle is a way of life. The skill needed to control a spirited horse, to win the chance to ride him in a race, and to make him run faster and finish closer than anyone expects.
Note that I said “finish closer”. Only one can win, and it probably won’t be you, we all know that. But second place is honourable. Third place gets a payout. Even fourth place brings some small glory. Whatever happens, the battle continues.
Our friend Md Zairi bin Hassim knew the battle better than anyone. He began as an apprentice 25 years ago and eventually became known as Jockey M Zairi. Initially with Charles Leck, he came back when his old boss made a new start here at Selangor Turf Club. By then, Zairi was the trusted and dedicated employee who got up in the middle of the night to feed the horses. He rode nervous horses at trackwork with calm patience. In races, he rode hundreds of ‘roughie’s’ which had no realistic chance with skill and purpose.
Zairi carried himself with dignity, and never turned away from the battle. He managed 47 winners in his time and every single one was deserved. Other jockeys will gain as many victories in a single year without ever working as hard as Zairi, the battler, did.
On Sunday 14th October, just before the fourth race at Perak Turf Club, his mount suddenly reared over and crushed him. Even the most experienced rider can be taken by surprise. Zairi was badly injured and passed away just a short time later. He goes with our thoughts, our prayers and our admiration.
May his soul, rest in peace.
