EQUINE SANCTUARY TUNKU GOLD CUP 2025
The Selangor Turf Club is set to host the running of the EQUINE SANCTUARY TUNKU GOLD CUP on Sunday, 16 March 2025 offering prize money of RM300,000.
The race is sponsored by Singapore based Equine Sanctuary Private Limited, a premier Horse Care service Provider to Singapore’s leading provider of Quality Horse Products. Equine Sanctuary has established distributorships of Horse Products to other parts of South East Asia and North Asia as well as completed various Equine related projects on China and Mongolia.
Managing Director of Equine Sanctuary Pte Ltd, Mr Eric Koh has pledged to contribute a total of RM350,000 to Selangor Turf Club over three years from 2023 to 2025 being sponsorship of the Tunku Gold Cup. The race were won by San Andreas ridden by Jockey E Ferreira and Cheval Blanc astride Jockey KC Tham in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
San Andreas was trained by AB Abdullah for Box Office Stable meanwhile Cheval Blanc from the yard of Trainer Frank Maynard is owned by RC & Team Cheval Stable. The prize money for the race has been increased from RM150,000 in 2023 to RM200,000 in 2024 and this year it offers stakes of RM300,000.
The race is named after the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Teramat Mulia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and ever since then, the race has been one of the most respected classic race in the Malaysian horse racing circuit. The first Tunku Gold Cup race was held on 18 February 1968 offering stakes of $20,100. Tunku personally presented the prizes to the winning connections.
The race is also the first leg of the Club’s Triple Crown Series which consist of the three classic races of the Club, the Equine Sanctuary Tunku Gold Cup, the Hygain Horse City Selangor Gold Cup and the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor. These races are open to 3 Years Olds and above with rating band 71 and above. The Hygain Horse City Selangor Gold Cup and Piala Emas Sultan Selangor are scheduled to be held on September 14 and December 7 respectively.
Appropriately themed “where sprinters meet stayers”, the races will be held over three varying distances of 1200 metres for the Equine Sanctuary Tunku Gold Cup race, 1600 metres for the Hygain Horse City Selangor Gold Cup race and finally the 2000 metres Piala Emas Sultan Selangor race. The aim of the series to find a single horse that can emerge as the winner in all the three races in the series.
