KUALA LUMPUR:  May 26, 2024

Late bloomer MAINSTREAM scored a remarkable win in the Stayers Stakes C over 1700m on the No. 2 track at Sungai Besi here today to make it five consecutive wins for the New Zealand gelding.

After a run of three wins in Class 5, the son of Highly Recommended won a similar race over the same course and distance three weeks ago.

Ridden again by apprentice Mohd Nazir, MAINSTREAM went to the front on settling down as usual. He led into the straight with the rest of the runners bunched up behind him.

MONTANA FLASH broke from the pack and raced past MAINSTREAM at the 150m when the leader came under pressure.

MONTANA FLASH quickly kicked away to a clear lead. But he too came under pressure close to home and drifted inside. MAINSTREAM then raised another effort in the final 50m to regain the lead to win by half a length. NORDIC GEM flashed home to beat MONTANA FLASH for second.

“MAINSTREAM is a late maturing and improving horse,” said trainer Charles Leck.

“He is very honest and always gives his best. He is a handy horse running over a distance and could even tackle a longer trip (than 1700m). There are few more wins for him if he keeps on improving.

“A good temperamental horse that all riders love to ride him in the morning workouts.”

MAINSTREAM, who landed unraced in 2020, had two unsuccessful seasons before winning three races last year.
